ABACUS Blown-In Attic Insulation
Attic Insulation reduces the amount of heat that travels between your attic space and the living environment of your Houston area home.
Heat naturally travels from warmer to cooler environments, so during the summer the heat from your attic is filtering into your home and causing your air conditioner to run longer. In the winter, the heat from your nice warm Houston area home is escaping into your attic and causing your heating system to run longer. A properly insulated attic space can save 15% to 30% off of your heating and cooling bill.
Abacus recommends AttiCat® Expanding Blown- In PINK® Fiberglas™ Insulation that adds millions of the tiny air pockets due to the fluffing of the material in the hose. And that gives the material its insulating power. Because FiberglasTM insulation will not settle, it will maintain the same energy-saving level over time, keeping your home comfortable for years to come. This is better than laying batts or rolls which must be cut and laid in by hand, leaving lots of gaps where heat exchange will occur.
ABACUS Spray-On Radiant Barrier
Spray-applied radiant barriers or IRCCs (Interior Radiation Control Coating) is applied to the undersurface of roof decking, and especially recommended in warmer climate zones.
Coating the underside of the roof with an IRCC lessens the amount of heat that can radiate into the building. The IRCC actually changes the surface characteristics of the substrate to which it is applied, making plywood, concrete or steel act more like Reynold’s WrapTM.
Spray on Radiant Barrier material safely reflects up to 80% of the radiant heat from the sun. This means that it never enters your attic space to begin with.
Conservative estimate indicate that the overall temperature in an attic environment can be lowered by 15 to 20 degrees.
Once again, this means your cooling system is working a lot less and much more effectively.
Why Spray-On Versus Foil?
For homes that are already constructed, Spray-On Barriers are less expensive than foil and seem to avoid many long-term problems that foil products can potentially encounter during the life of the roof: de-lamination, ripping/ tearing, moisture permeability, roof rot and mold, electrical conductivity & lightning strikes, and flammability.
Appalachian State University Energy Center, NC, recently announced the results of a case study to measure the benefits of adding radiant barriers in home attics. Key findings include:
- 23 degree F drop in peak attic temperature
- 20% reduction in the A/C units run time during peak hours • 57% efficiency improvement in the cooled air delivered through the air ducts
*Actual dollar savings and ROI time can vary widely due to a plethora of factors including, but not limited to: climate zone, size of building, number of stories and amount of conditioned space, utility usage, building direction and slope of roof, tree shading, roof color, decking material, current insulation and ventilation packages, and much more. The critical measurement is that thermal emittance value. The lower the emissivity, the less heat is allowed to radiate into the building. Just like standard insulations have an R-value (the higher the better), radiant barriers and IRCCs have an “e-value” (the lower the better). How that ultimately affects the utility bill, however, will be different from house to house and building to building.
ABACUS Solar Powered Attic Ventilation
This new solar powered technology uses no electricity and is extremely important during the hot summer months for removing heat and humidity from the attic space.
Removing heat from the attic allows your cooling system to work much more efficiently.
Plus removal of moisture prohibits the growth of mold and mildew. In our hot and humid Houston environment, these two things are crucial to a safe, healthier and more efficient home.
