There is a small word hiding in that question doing a lot of work. "A" mini split. One unit, or one system? Those have very different answers, and most pages online blur them together.
Here is whether a mini split can cool a whole house, and what actually decides it in Houston. A properly designed system can absolutely handle a full home. A single indoor unit almost never will, because air does not move through closed doors.
Our climate adds a wrinkle that square footage cannot explain. Houston stays humid for most of the year, so pulling moisture out of the air matters as much as dropping the temperature. That shapes this decision more than the size of your house does.
Below you will find how many indoor units a home really needs, when going ductless is the right call here, and the humidity issue almost nobody brings up.
A mini split system can cool a whole house. A single mini split usually cannot.
One indoor head conditions the space it sits in. Air does not travel through closed doors, so every enclosed room you want cooled needs its own head. Each head runs as its own zone with its own thermostat. A single unit only handles a whole home when that home is small and open.
Whole-house ductless means a multi-zone system. One or more outdoor units feed several indoor heads, and each zone gets its own control.
In Houston, the deciding factor is rarely capacity. It is humidity and layout. Heads sized too large cool fast, shut off, and never pull enough moisture out of the air.
The difference matters more than anything else on this page.
A single-zone setup pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor head. The two work together as a pair. This is what most people picture when they hear "mini split," and it is the right tool for a garage, a sunroom, or an addition.
A multi-zone system runs several indoor heads from one or more outdoor units. Each head has its own control, so the primary bedroom can sit cooler than the guest room. When someone asks whether a mini split can cool a whole house, this is almost always what they need.
Here is the part that surprises people. One head cools the space it occupies plus any space air can move into freely. Close a door and that airflow stops at the door. The far room never catches up, no matter how large the unit is.
Open-concept homes are the exception. A living, kitchen, and dining area with no walls between them can often run as one zone. Even then, bedrooms down a hallway are their own story.
The first thing we ask when we walk a home is simple. How many doors close in your house? That number tells us more about your zone count than the square footage on your tax record does.
Knowing it takes a system, not a unit, raises the next question. How many?
Start by counting enclosed spaces you actually want conditioned, not total rooms:
Modern systems support several indoor heads from one outdoor unit. Larger homes sometimes need more than one outdoor unit to carry the total load.
One warning about the math you will find online. Square-footage rules of thumb are the wrong tool here. Ceiling height, window exposure, insulation quality, and which direction your rooms face all move the number. A room with west-facing glass carries a very different load than an interior bedroom of the same size.
We walk the house and count zones before quoting anything. That means opening doors, checking window exposure, and asking how you actually use each room. A guest room used four nights a year does not need the same treatment as the bedroom you sleep in every night.
Counting heads tells you the scope. It does not tell you whether ductless is the right choice. Here is where it genuinely is.
Your home has no ductwork at all. Plenty of older Houston homes were never designed for central air.
Your ducts are past saving. When replacing the duct system costs about what going around it would, ductless becomes the practical answer.
You live in a historic or renovated home. Running duct chases means opening finished walls and ceilings you may not want touched.
Central AC never reaches certain rooms. Converted garages, additions, sunrooms, and bonus rooms above garages sit outside the reach of most duct systems.
Your household keeps different schedules. Per-room control lets you condition the rooms in use and leave the rest alone.
The install footprint is part of the appeal. Each head needs a compact opening through the exterior wall for the refrigerant line. No duct runs through the attic, no dropped ceilings, and no weeks of construction dust moving through the house.

Working ductwork is worth keeping. If your ducts move air well and hold what they carry, sealing and repairing them costs less than abandoning them. The delivery method is not usually the problem.
Central filtration and humidity control run through one point in a ducted system. That is simpler to manage than handling it zone by zone.
Visible equipment is the other honest trade. Every conditioned room gets a wall or ceiling unit you can see. Some people never notice. Others mind quite a bit, and it is better to know which you are before installation day.
Head count is the practical limit. A home chopped into many small rooms with doors everywhere needs a lot of heads, and at some point ducts do the job more sensibly.
If your ducts are sound, look at central air conditioning installation before you rule it out.
Capacity is the easy part here. Moisture is the hard part.
Houston stays humid for most of the year. Your system is not just lowering temperature, it is pulling water out of the air. A house at the right temperature with too much moisture in it still feels wrong.
Here is where ductless can go sideways. A head sized too large for its room cools that room fast, then shuts off. It never runs long enough to remove much moisture. You end up with a bedroom that reads 72 on the display and feels cold and clammy at the same time. Sizing each zone correctly matters more in our climate than it does almost anywhere else.
Maintenance is the second half of this. Our humid air encourages growth inside indoor units, and the two problems we find most often on mini splits are clogged condensate drains and dirty coils. Neither announces itself early. Both get expensive if left alone.
