You can add AC to a room with no ductwork, and you have four real options. None of them require tearing open walls. We have cooled these rooms in Houston homes since 2003, and the right answer depends more on how you use the space than on what it costs.

Insulation sits underneath all of it. A converted garage or sunroom with no insulation will disappoint you no matter which option you pick.

Converted garages. Common across Houston, and most were finished without insulating for it. The slab and the walls were never built to hold conditioned air. Houston sits in climate zone 2, and these conversions rarely hit the recommended insulation levels for it.
Sunrooms and enclosed patios. Glass and thin walls mean heat pours in all afternoon. These rooms gain heat faster than any other space in the house.
Bonus rooms over a garage. Hot garage below, hot attic above, and one exterior-facing box in between.
Room additions. Built after your original system was sized. The equipment was never asked to cool that square footage.
Attic conversions. Surrounded by the hottest part of your house on nearly every side.
One case is different from the rest.
If the room already has a vent and still never gets cool, you may not need a new system. That is often an airflow problem. A crushed duct, a disconnected run, a closed damper, or a return that cannot pull enough air back.
Worth checking before you shop for equipment. Fixing a duct is a smaller job than adding a system.
A mini split is a permanent cooling system for one room. It works like your central AC, without the ducts.
An outdoor unit sits outside, and an indoor head mounts on the wall inside. Refrigerant lines run between them through a small opening in the exterior wall, roughly three inches across. That opening is the only hole anyone makes in your house.

That dehumidifying point deserves a sentence. On a humid Houston afternoon, a room can read a comfortable number on a thermometer and still feel awful. Removing moisture is half the job, and a properly sized mini split does it steadily.
Best fit: a room you use regularly and want comfortable all year. A home office, a converted garage that became a living space, a guest suite that gets real use.

This works when the room adjoins conditioned space and the duct run would be short. An addition off the back of the house, close to your air handler, is the best case.
Start with a load calculation, not a duct run. The question is whether your current system has capacity to spare. Adding square footage to a system that is already working at its limit does not just fail to cool the new room. It makes the whole house worse.
Attic access decides the rest. A technician needs a practical route from the plenum to the new space. If the path crosses framing, a fire wall, or a section with no working room, the job gets harder fast.
Best fit: a room addition near your air handler, on a system with headroom.
Worst fit: a converted garage or a sunroom. Those spaces have a heat load unlike the rest of your house. Feeding them from a system sized for insulated living space usually disappoints everyone.
There is one more version of this. If your system is near the end of its life anyway, replacing it with correctly sized equipment and extending the ducts at the same time can be the cleaner move.
For some rooms, this is the right answer. We will say that plainly.
A window unit is self-contained and costs the least of the four. Nobody has to run refrigerant lines, pull a permit, or open a wall. You buy it, you install it, you use it.

One Houston-specific caution. The seal around the unit matters more here than it does in a dry climate. Gaps let humid outside air in continuously, and the unit spends its capacity fighting that instead of cooling the room. Foam, weatherstripping, and a tight fit are not optional here.
Best fit: rooms you use occasionally, and situations where a permanent system does not make sense yet.
This is the one people buy first and regret most. It has a real use, but it is the weakest of the four.
A portable unit rolls into the room and vents hot air out a window through a flexible hose. Nothing gets installed. You plug it in and it runs.

The design is the core problem. A single-hose portable pulls air from inside your room to cool its condenser, then blows that air outside. Air has to replace it, and that replacement comes from the rest of your house or from outdoors. In Houston, that means hot, humid air moving in while the unit works to remove it.
The hotter it gets outside, the wider that gap grows. Portable units disappoint most on exactly the days you need them most.
Best fit: renters, short-term needs, or a stopgap while something better gets scheduled.
