Here is something most homeowners never get told. Refrigerant is not fuel. Your air conditioner does not burn through it the way your car burns gasoline.
It runs in a sealed loop, over and over, for the life of the system. So if a technician tells you that you are low, that refrigerant went somewhere. Finding a refrigerant leak in an AC takes specific equipment, and knowing the process tells you whether yours is being handled properly. We have worked on Houston systems since 2003.
Below you will find the signs you can spot without tools, the four methods a technician uses to locate the actual leak, where these leaks usually happen, and how to think about repairing versus replacing. Also the conversation is worth having if someone has recharged your system more than once.

Without tools, here is what you can notice:
One rule sits underneath all of it. A system low on refrigerant has a leak. Recharging without finding it means paying for the same problem again.
Your air conditioner is a sealed loop. The same refrigerant cycles through it continuously, absorbing heat inside and releasing it outside.
Nothing consumes it. Your car burns gasoline, so the tank empties and you refill it. Refrigerant works nothing like that. A system that was charged correctly at installation should hold that charge for its entire life. Refrigerant is federally regulated for that reason — it is meant to stay in the system, not enter the air.
So a low system is a leaking system. There is no other explanation. The refrigerant did not evaporate, get used up, or wear out. It escaped through a hole somewhere.
This matters for one reason. If your system has been recharged more than once, you have an unrepaired leak. Needing a recharge every spring is not maintenance. It is the same problem coming back on a schedule set by how big the hole is.
Running low also costs you more than comfort. Your compressor depends on refrigerant returning to it for cooling and lubrication. A system running short puts that compressor under strain it was never designed to handle. The compressor is the most expensive component in your air conditioner.
You do not need tools to spot most of these. Watch for them together rather than one at a time.
Weak cooling. Air comes out cool but never cold, and the house never quite gets there.
Long cycles. The system runs far longer than it used to for the same result.
Ice on the coil or line. Frost or ice anywhere on the indoor coil or the refrigerant line is a strong signal.
Hissing or bubbling. Escaping refrigerant makes noise. Bubbling usually means a larger leak.
Oily residue. Refrigerant carries oil with it. A damp, dirty film near a fitting or coil often marks the spot.
A humid house. Your AC removes moisture as it cools. Rooms that feel clammy at a normal temperature point to a system that cannot do that job.
A higher electric bill. Longer run times show up on the bill before they show up anywhere else.
That humidity sign deserves attention in Houston. Here, a system losing capacity shows up as a sticky house before it shows up as a hot one.
One caution. Every sign on this list also appears with other AC problems. A dirty filter, a failing blower, or a blocked coil can all look like this. Matching symptoms to a cause is what the diagnostic visit is for.
Finding the hole is a different job from knowing one exists. Here is what that takes.

Pressure readings come first. Before anyone hunts for a hole, the readings have to confirm the system is genuinely low. Plenty of poor-cooling calls turn out to be something else.
Electronic detection is the usual next step. The technician moves the probe slowly along both coils, the fittings, and the line set. The unit signals when it senses refrigerant in the air.
Dye takes patience. It has to circulate through the system before anything shows, which sometimes means a return visit.
Nitrogen testing is the thorough option. The refrigerant is recovered, the system is filled with nitrogen at pressure, and the pressure is monitored. A drop proves a leak exists even when nothing else revealed it.
These get combined. One method suggests a location and another confirms it.
One practical note. Wind and rain interfere with detection equipment and make small signs harder to see. A leak check scheduled during bad weather sometimes has to move, and that is a sign of care rather than a delay tactic.
Leaks are not random. A handful of spots account for most of what we find.
Evaporator coil. The most common location, and the hardest to reach. It sits inside your air handler, often in the attic.
Schrader valve cores. The small valves behind the service port caps on your outdoor unit. They wear, and they are a frequent source.
Brazed joints. Anywhere two pieces of copper were joined during installation or a past repair.
The line set. The insulated copper lines running between your indoor and outdoor units. Vulnerable where they run outside or through an attic.
Condenser coil. The outdoor coil takes weather, debris, and physical impact.
Filter drier connections. Another brazed joint, and one exposed to the elements on many installs.
Where the leak sits matters more than the fact that you have one.
A leaking valve core is a small part and a short repair. A leaking evaporator coil is a different conversation entirely, because the coil has to come out of the air handler and a replacement coil is a major component.

Adding refrigerant to a leaking system treats the symptom. Your AC will cool again, sometimes for a whole season. Then it will be low again, on a timeline set by the size of the hole. You pay twice for the same problem, and sometimes more than twice.
Refrigerant handling is also federally regulated. Venting refrigerant into the air is prohibited. Purchasing most refrigerants requires technical certification. Those rules exist because this is not a substance meant to be released and replaced casually.
Here is what to ask when someone tells you your system is low:
A technician who found the leak can answer all four. One who recharged and left cannot answer the third.
If your system has been topped off more than once without anyone locating the source, that is worth questioning. It is not always dishonesty. Sometimes it is a rushed call on a hot day. But it is not a repair, and you should know the difference.
Our climate is hard on the parts that hold refrigerant.
Humidity is the main culprit. An evaporator coil is built from thin copper and aluminum, and it sits wet for most of the year here. Moisture plus time works on that metal. Pinhole leaks develop slowly, long before anything shows up in your cooling.
Location makes it worse. Most Houston air handlers sit in the attic. Nobody looks at that coil between service visits, so a slow leak has months to run before anyone notices the house is not keeping up.
Then there are the hours. Our cooling season runs eight months or longer. That is far more running time, more starts and stops, and more vibration working on brazed joints than the same system would see up north.
Outdoors, the line set and condenser take real abuse. Storm debris, string trimmers, and lawn equipment all account for leaks we find. So does simple weather exposure on the copper and the fittings.
One more factor applies to older systems. Air conditioners still running R-22 face a supply problem, since production of that refrigerant ended years ago. A leak on an R-22 system is a different conversation than a leak on a newer one.
Not every leak means a new system. The answer depends on three things.
Where the leak is. A worn valve core or a loose fitting is a small repair. A leaking evaporator coil is a major component and a much bigger job.
Whether the coil is under warranty. Check this before anything else. Many systems carry a ten-year parts warranty on the coil. That single fact can change the whole decision.
How old the system is. On a system past twelve to fifteen years, a major coil leak usually points toward replacement rather than repair.
