There are two possibilities here, and it matters which one you have. Either the thermostat is reading wrong, or the thermostat is reading right and your house feels wrong anyway. The second one catches people off guard.
If your thermostat is reading the wrong temperature, the fix is often free. Dust, batteries, and afternoon sun cause more of these calls than failed hardware does. But sometimes the number on the wall is correct and something else is making you uncomfortable.
Many of the thermostat calls we run in Houston end with an accurate thermostat and a humidity or airflow problem behind it. Below we start by confirming whether the reading is actually off. Then we cover what you can fix yourself, and why a Houston house can feel warm at exactly the temperature you set.

Hold a separate thermometer next to the thermostat for fifteen minutes. If the two match, the device is fine and the cause is elsewhere.
Before you touch anything, find out whether the thermostat is lying. This takes fifteen minutes and costs nothing.
Set a separate thermometer right next to the thermostat. Tape it to the wall beside it or rest it on a shelf at the same height. Sun, drafts, and doorways can all cause false readings.
Wait fifteen minutes. The thermometer needs time to settle to the air around it. Reading it right away gives you nothing.
Compare the two numbers. A gap of a degree or two is normal and not a fault. A gap of five degrees or more points to the device itself.
If the numbers match, your thermostat is working. Something else in the house is making it feel otherwise, and the rest of this article covers what.
One more check before you go further. Look at your schedule and any hold settings. A programmed setback you forgot about looks exactly like a malfunction.
Four things cause most inaccurate readings, and none of them require a service call.
Clean the sensor. Dust settles on the sensor inside and insulates it from the room air. Open or remove the cover and clean gently with a soft brush or a short burst of compressed air.
Replace the batteries. Low power causes erratic readings before any low-battery warning appears on the display. Change them once a year whether the indicator has shown up or not.
Check that it sits level. Older mercury thermostats have to be level on the wall to read correctly. If yours got bumped or was never hung straight, adjust it.
Look at your settings. A hold, a schedule, or a temporary change someone else made explains a lot of these complaints.
Work through them in that order. The first two solve more of these calls than anything else on the list.
Your thermostat measures one thing: the air touching it. It does not know what the rest of your house feels like. So anything warming or cooling that one spot changes the number on the display.
Look at what surrounds yours:
Sun is the most common of these in Houston. A wall that catches afternoon light can push the reading several degrees high. Your system then shuts off early and leaves the rest of the house warm.
The vent problem works the same way. Cool air blowing straight onto the sensor tells the thermostat the job is done before it actually is.
Standard placement is an interior wall, about five feet from the floor, in a central part of the home. That matches thermostat placement guidance from the Department of Energy.
Sometimes the whole fix is closing a blind or moving a lamp. Try that before anything else.
Temperature and comfort are not the same thing. Your body cools itself by evaporating moisture off your skin. Humid air slows that down, so you stay warmer even when the number has not changed.
That is why 74 degrees in a humid house feels different from 74 degrees in a dry one. The thermostat is not wrong. Your house is holding too much moisture.
Here is the part most people miss. Your AC only pulls humidity out of the air while it is actually running. A system that cools the air fast and shuts off quickly never runs long enough to dehumidify.
Short cycling does this. So does a system that is oversized for the house, which is one common cause of short cycling.

Lowering the set point will not fix this. You get the same short cycles at a colder number, and the moisture stays.
Your thermostat reads one spot and runs the whole house from it. It can be perfectly accurate where it hangs while a back bedroom sits five degrees warmer.
Houston homes are built on slabs, so the ductwork runs through the attic. That attic gets far hotter than the air inside. Cooled air traveling through it gives up some of that cooling before it ever reaches your room.
Leaks in those ducts make it worse. Air escaping into the attic never arrives anywhere, and the rooms farthest from the air handler feel it first.
Closed or blocked vents create the same pattern. Shutting a vent in one room does not send that air somewhere useful. It changes the pressure across the whole system.
None of this is a thermostat problem. Replacing the thermostat will not move more air into that bedroom.
Rooms that never match the rest of the house? Start with an air duct evaluation. If your attic runs hot enough to work against your ducts, look at attic insulation and ventilation.
Run the thermometer test first. If the numbers match and your house still feels wrong, the thermostat was never the problem.
