Houston is a wonderful place to live. It’s near the coast, which is great for weekend getaways. It has a rich and vibrant environment for arts and culture. It always has a very long list of events and things to do. As Houstonians and Texas coast dwellers, we can certainly understand why some of our communities made the top of the list as one of the greatest places to live in 2021, according to the article posted in the Houston Chronicle.
Just a short drive down the road from Houston, forested suburb The Woodlands has now earned the prestigious distinction as the No. 1
Best City to Live in America, according to Niche.com.
“We have been in the Top 10 for a number of years, and today, it’s with great honor to receive the news we’re ranked #1,” The Woodlands Township Chairman Gordy Bunch stated in a press release. “The Woodlands is a dynamic hometown within a natural forest and is known for its balance between man and nature.”
Niche.com recently released its 2021 Best Place to Live rankings. It’s no easy feat to win this No. 1 title. The Woodlands took the coveted No. 1 spot out of 228 cities and 18,516 towns and neighborhoods listed nationwide.
“I think truly because of the pandemic and the ability to work remotely and not having to commute have to be factors of that No. 1 ranking,” Boulevard Realty owner Billy Baldwin told Chron. “The tremendous amount of growth in retail, professional space give opportunity for people to truly not leave that ZIP code very far.”
So, why do so many people call The Woodlands the most desirable place to live in the U.S.? It’s that connection to parks and nature that give it a special allure. The suburb boasts 140 parks and is linked by more than 220+ miles of hike and bike trails. Tucked near Sam Houston National Forest, The Woodlands is home to more than 118,000 residents and over 2,000 businesses.
“This master-planned community took into account living in harmony with nature. That’s the most desirable thing about it,” Bill Baldwin told Chron. “For those who want the master-planned livable forest, that’s an excellent choice for them. Its been the community of choice for many people for decades.”
The rankings are derived by using data from the U.S. Census, FBI, BLS, CDC as well as millions of resident reviews, according to Niche.com. To assess the No. 1 ranking, the company weighs factors including the local housing market, neighborhood diversity, affordability, area public schools and walkability.

In 2021, only two other Texas cities showed up in the top 20: Plano at No. 7 and Richardson at No. 12.
