If your Houston home was built before the early 1980s, you probably have cast iron under it. That single fact changes the question you are asking.
Here is whether hydro jetting can damage old cast iron pipes, and the three conditions where we will not do it at all. The short answer is that it depends on how much pipe wall is left, and you cannot tell that from above ground.
Cast iron is stubborn stuff. Sound pipe with thick walls handles jetting well and comes out cleaner than any other method leaves it. Pipe that has thinned from the inside is a different story, and the outside gives you no warning either way.
Houston is hard on it in particular. Our cast iron sits under slabs, in clay soil that shifts every season, with live oaks and pecans pressing on the joints from above. Add humidity and hard water working on the inside, and a fifty-year-old line here is often in worse shape than the same pipe somewhere milder. Three situations where we will not jet cast iron:
A camera decides. For marginal pipe, mechanical descaling is the safer tool.
Cast iron does not wear out the way you would expect. It corrodes from the inside, where nobody can see it. The outside of the pipe can look perfectly sound while the wall thickness is a fraction of what it started as. Pipe service life varies widely by material, and cast iron sits well below what most homeowners assume.
Two things happen in there over the decades.
Tuberculation is rust building inward in nodules. It narrows the opening and roughens the wall, which gives grease and debris something to grab. A pipe that started at four inches can carry the flow of a much smaller one.
Channeling is the more serious pattern. Water and waste sit in the bottom of a horizontal line, so the bottom corrodes first and fastest. Over enough years, the floor of the pipe wears through entirely. What remains is a trough with dirt underneath it.
Then there is the part that catches people out. Heavy scale inside an old cast iron line can be holding pressure almost like a liner. Strip that buildup away and you expose metal thin enough to fail. Holes can appear right after a cleaning, and the homeowner reasonably concludes the cleaning caused them.
It did not, exactly. The pipe was already gone in that spot, and the scale was the only thing standing in for it. But you still end up with a leak under your slab, and knowing whose fault it technically was does not help.
That is why wall thickness is the first thing we look at on camera. Not the clog. The clog is why you called. The wall is what decides what we can safely do about it.
Some cast iron gets jetted every day without incident. Some should never see a jetter. Here is where we draw the line.
Channel rot. The camera shows the bottom of the pipe gone, with dirt where the floor should be. High-pressure water can wash out what is supporting the line and drop it. Nothing gets jetted in this condition.
Pre-1950 pipe. Seventy-five years or more of corrosion, plus every penetration and joint that has been worked on since. We move to mechanical cleaning on these almost every time.
Interior cast iron stacks. The drain lines running inside your walls are thinner than the four-inch main outside. Hydraulic shock from a jetter can blow out old fittings and crack joints behind finished drywall, and you will not know until it appears on a ceiling.
There is a fourth situation that depends on what the camera shows. Sometimes tree roots have grown through a cracked section and are effectively holding it together. Cutting them out is the right instinct and exactly the wrong move, because the crack is what remains afterward.
That one takes judgment rather than a rule. We look at how much pipe is intact around the intrusion before deciding whether removing the roots leaves anything behind.
All four of these get worse in a Houston home. When the line runs beneath a slab, a collapse is not a repair you reach with a shovel. It becomes a tunnel, and our under slab plumbing work is where that conversation goes.
When jetting is off the table, cleaning is not necessarily off the table. There is a second method, and most homeowners have never heard of it.

Descaling uses a high-torque machine that spins a flexible steel cable at speed. Chain knockers on the end scrape rust nodules and scale off the pipe wall as the cable travels. No water pressure, so no hydraulic shock to old joints and fittings.
That makes it the safer choice on cast iron that is worn but not gone. It works beautifully on stable pipe that still has thick walls, and it can restore a line that would not survive a jetter.
What it cannot do is save channel rot. If the floor of the pipe is missing, no cleaning method puts it back. Scraping a trough is still a trough.
Pressure matters too when jetting is appropriate. Older cast iron in fair condition with tight joints gets cleaned at the low end of our range, not the top of it. Same equipment, very different setting, and that call comes from the footage rather than from habit.
We pick between the two after the camera, never before. Our drain cleaning work covers both approaches.
Cleaning restores flow. It does not restore pipe wall.
That distinction matters more with cast iron than with anything else. A jetted or descaled line drains beautifully afterward, and the pipe is exactly as thin as it was before. If the wall is nearly gone, you have bought yourself a working drain and a shorter clock.
Cast iron has a finite service life. Much of Houston's is well into it, and some of it is past it. When the camera shows a pipe near the end, cleaning is a delay rather than a solution, and we would rather say so than sell you a service every eighteen months until it fails.

Put those together and a fifty-year-old cast iron line in Houston is frequently in worse condition than the same pipe and the same age somewhere with stable soil and fewer trees.
That is why age alone tells us less here than it does elsewhere. A 1968 line in a well-drained lot with no trees can be fine. The same line under a slab with a pecan overhead can be finished.
Once a Houston cast iron line passes forty years, we recommend a camera before any cleaning is scheduled. Not as an upsell, but because the alternative is putting a tool into a pipe nobody has looked at.
You cannot judge cast iron from a slow drain, and neither can we. The pipe has to be looked at before anyone decides how to clean it.

The line running from your house out to the city connection is generally yours to maintain. The public main beyond that point belongs to the city.
Where exactly that boundary sits matters, and it is worth confirming with City of Houston Public Works for your address before assuming. It affects who pays for what.
Find your cleanout now, while nothing is wrong. It is usually a capped pipe sticking up in the yard between your house and the street. Some are flush with the ground and hidden under grass.

Those options range widely. A single damaged section might need only a spot repair. A line with cracks and root intrusion but sound structure can often be lined from the inside without digging up the yard. A collapsed line needs replacement.
