You can answer this yourself in about two minutes. No tools, no crawling under the house.
Flush a toilet and watch the nearest shower. That one move tells you most of what you need to know. Knowing whether the problem is a drain or your sewer line comes down to one question: how many fixtures are affected. One slow sink is a very different problem from three slow drains. We have worked on Houston drain and sewer lines since 2003.
Below you will find the rule, the test that proves it, and what each answer means for you. Also the sign that tells you it is not a clog at all, and where water shows up first in a slab home like yours.
Count the fixtures. That is the whole rule.
One fixture affected means the clog sits in that fixture's own drain line. Several fixtures affected means the problem is in your main sewer line.
Here is the test:
Any reaction in a second fixture points to the sewer line.
One Houston detail. Most advice tells you to check the basement floor drain. We do not have basements here. In a slab home, water surfaces at the lowest opening, usually a first-floor shower or tub, or the cleanout in your yard.
Two things mean stop and call now. Sewage backing up into a fixture, or the same clog returning after it was cleared.
Your drain system is shaped like a tree. Each fixture has its own branch line. Every branch feeds into one trunk, the main sewer line, which carries everything out to the city connection.
That shape is why counting fixtures works.
Block a branch and only what sits on that branch has a problem. Block the trunk and everything upstream of the blockage backs up together.

One exception is worth knowing. Fixtures near each other often share a branch before reaching the main line. A tub and a sink in the same bathroom can both act up from a single branch clog.
So two affected fixtures in one bathroom is not automatically a sewer line problem. Two affected fixtures on opposite ends of the house usually is.
The test in the next section sorts that out.
Do these in order. Stop as soon as you get a reaction.
Flush the toilet. Watch the nearest shower or tub. If water rises in the drain, bubbles up, or you hear it react, the blockage sits past both fixtures. That means the main line.
Run the washing machine and listen to the toilet. A washer dumps a large volume of water fast. If the toilet gurgles while it drains, your main line is restricted.
Run a bathroom sink and watch the toilet water level. Movement in the bowl means air is being pushed around a blockage downstream.
That gurgling sound has a specific cause. Water cannot get past the blockage, so it pushes air backward through the system. The air escapes through the nearest water trap, and the bubbling you hear is it coming up through your toilet or shower.
Where water shows up first tells you something too. It surfaces at the lowest opening in the system.
This is where most advice fails Houston homeowners. Nearly every guide points you to the basement floor drain. Houston homes sit on slabs. There is no basement.
In a slab home, the lowest opening is usually a first-floor shower or tub. Sometimes it is the cleanout in your yard. If water is standing in that cleanout, your main line is blocked.
If any of these tests causes a second fixture to react, stop running water and call. Every gallon you send down has nowhere to go.
One fixture, every time, while everything else in the house works normally.
The bathroom sink drains slowly but the shower next to it is fine. The kitchen sink backs up but the toilets flush without complaint. No gurgling anywhere else.
What usually causes it depends on the fixture:
Most of these clear with the right equipment. A motorized auger reaches well past the trap, and hydro jetting scours the pipe wall where grease has built up.
One thing we do not recommend. Skip the liquid drain cleaners. They generate serious heat inside your pipe, which can damage PVC and corrode metal. Our climate keeps pipes warm already, so that reaction runs hotter here. And they rarely dissolve hair, which is what most shower clogs are made of.
One caveat before you file this away as a small problem. A single-fixture clog that keeps returning is not really a fixture problem. Something further down the line is causing it.

These signs point past your fixtures and into the main line.
Inside the house:
That odor deserves its own note. Your sewer line is sealed except for the vent stacks on the roof. You should never smell it inside your house. If you do, waste or sewer gas is escaping somewhere it should not.
Outside the house:
That green patch is not good news. Sewage is a fertilizer, and grass growing better in one spot usually means it is being fed from below.
If sewage is backing up into your home, treat it as a health hazard. Keep children and pets away from it. Stop running water anywhere in the house, including the washing machine and dishwasher. Every gallon makes it worse.
Then call. This one does not wait until morning.
Here is a pattern worth recognizing.
Your main line backs up. A plumber clears it. Everything works fine for a few months. Then it backs up again. Somebody clears it again.
If that describes your house, you do not have a clog problem. You have a pipe problem.
Clearing a line removes what is blocking it. It does nothing about whatever let the blockage form in the first place. The line works again because the obstruction is gone, not because anything was repaired.
Three things usually cause that cycle:
Root intrusion. Roots find a crack or a joint, grow inside, and catch waste and paper like a net. Clearing the line cuts the roots back. It does not close the opening they came through, so they grow back.
Separated joints. Soil movement pulls sections apart. Waste catches at the gap every time.
Bellies. The pipe sags into a low spot. Water and waste pool there instead of flowing through, and the low spot fills again after every clearing.
Our rule of thumb: two clearings on the same line within a year means it is time for a camera, not a third clearing.
A camera inspection shows you what is actually happening inside the pipe. Where it is, what caused it, and whether the line needs a spot repair or something more.
We will say the uncomfortable part. Repeat snaking is billable work. It is also not a repair, and you deserve to know the difference before you pay for it a third time.
Six local conditions work against buried pipe here.
Clay soil movement. Our soil swells when it rains and shrinks in drought. Anything buried in it rides that motion year after year. Joints work apart and sections shift out of alignment.
Foundation settlement. As the ground moves, pipe under and around your slab can sag into low spots. Those bellies hold water and waste instead of letting it flow through. Every one becomes a place blockages start.
Tree roots. Live oaks, pecans, and magnolias send roots a long way looking for water. A sewer line is a reliable source, and roots find their way in through cracks and joints. Established neighborhoods with mature trees see this most.
Older pipe. Cast iron and clay were standard for decades. Both crack, corrode, and separate over time. Homes built before 1990 across Spring, Humble, Klein, Tomball, and Kingwood often still have their original lines.
Grease. It goes down warm and liquid, then cools and hardens inside the pipe. Layer by layer, it narrows the line until something catches.
Heavy rain. A big storm puts volume through the system fast. A line that is already restricted has no room to handle it.
There is one more reason to take a sewer leak seriously here. Wastewater escaping underground softens the soil around the pipe. In a slab home, softened soil under or near the foundation can lead to movement you will notice upstairs long before you find the leak below.
The line running from your house out to the city connection is generally yours to maintain. The public main beyond that point belongs to the city.
Where exactly that boundary sits matters, and it is worth confirming with City of Houston Public Works for your address before assuming. It affects who pays for what.
Find your cleanout now, while nothing is wrong. It is usually a capped pipe sticking up in the yard between your house and the street. Some are flush with the ground and hidden under grass.
Knowing where it is saves real time later. It is also the first thing a plumber will ask about.

Those options range widely. A single damaged section might need only a spot repair. A line with cracks and root intrusion but sound structure can often be lined from the inside without digging up the yard. A collapsed line needs replacement.
The camera is what tells you which conversation you are having.

That means the blockage sits past both fixtures, in your main sewer line. Wastewater from the toilet cannot move forward, so it takes the next available opening — usually the lowest drain nearby. This is one of the clearest signs of a main line problem.
Gurgling is trapped air being pushed backward through your system. Water cannot get past a blockage, so the air it displaces escapes through the nearest water trap. If using one fixture makes another gurgle, the restriction is downstream of both.
No, and store-bought products will not do it either. Main line blockages sit well beyond the reach of household tools and usually involve roots, grease buildup, or pipe damage. Chemical cleaners generate heat that can damage pipe without clearing the obstruction.
Usually in the yard between your house and the street, as a capped pipe a few inches across. Some sit flush with the ground and get hidden by grass over the years. Find it before you need it, because a plumber will ask.
No. A line that backs up repeatedly after being cleared has an underlying problem — roots entering through a crack, a separated joint, or a sagging section that collects waste. Two clearings on the same line within a year is the point to run a camera instead of clearing it again.
