You can date your sewer line without digging up the yard. The year your house went up tells you what the pipe is made of, and that material sets the clock. Homes built before the 1970s usually have clay pipe. Cast iron was standard into the late 1970s. Anything built from the 1980s on likely has PVC.
Then there is the part those ratings leave out. How long a sewer line lasts in Houston clay soil depends as much on the ground as on the pipe itself. Our soil swells through a wet spring and shrinks through a dry August, year after year. Rigid pipe cannot move with it, so few lines here reach the number on paper.

Clay pipe comes in short sections joined end to end. The clay itself resists corrosion and can sit in the ground for decades. The joints are the weak point, and there are a lot of them.
Cast iron is the opposite problem. The pipe is one strong piece, but it rusts from within. As the wall thins and scale builds up, the opening narrows and debris starts catching.
Your build year is a good guess, not a guarantee. Homes remodeled over the years often have a mix, with newer PVC tied into an original cast iron or clay run. Additions and re-routed bathrooms are common places for that seam.
One more thing about the numbers above. They describe pipe installed well and left undisturbed in stable ground. That is not what we have here.

The ground under your home is not stable. Houston sits on expansive clay, which means it takes on water and swells. When the water leaves, it shrinks back and pulls away.
Our seasons drive that cycle hard. A wet Gulf Coast spring soaks the clay and it expands. A dry late summer pulls the moisture out and it contracts. That happens every year, and the pipe below has to absorb it.
Sewer pipe is rigid. It cannot flex with moving ground, so the stress lands on the weakest points first. Joints separate. Sections shift out of line. Long stretches settle into low spots where waste sits instead of draining.
Slab-on-grade construction makes it worse. Your drain line runs inside the moving soil rather than beside it. The same ground that shifts your foundation is shifting the pipe underneath it.

Your sewer line has no pressure behind it. It moves waste by gravity alone, which means slope is everything. A drop of even an inch across a run can be enough to start collecting solids.
That is why bellies cause repeat clogs rather than one dramatic failure. The line still drains, just not completely. Every use leaves a little behind, and the buildup grows until something stops moving.
Roots work the same way, slowly. They enter through a gap the soil created, then thicken season after season. Clearing them without fixing the opening means they come back.
Your line usually gives you notice before it quits. The signs are easy to miss because they start small and come on slowly.

One slow sink is a fixture problem. Several at once points at the main line they all feed into.
Some combinations deserve faster attention than others. Gurgling plus multiple slow drains usually means a partial blockage in the main. A yard patch plus indoor smell suggests the line is already leaking into the soil. Drain trouble alongside new cracks is worth checking quickly, since a leaking line and a moving slab tend to drive each other.
A camera inspection is the only way to see the inside of your sewer line. We feed a waterproof camera down the pipe and watch the run on a monitor. It shows bellies, offsets, roots, scale, and cracks, along with where each one sits.
That location detail matters. Knowing a problem is at 40 feet rather than somewhere in a 90-foot run is the difference between a targeted repair and digging up the whole path.
Age alone will not tell you this. Two homes on the same street, built the same year, can hold lines in completely different shape. Tree placement, soil moisture, and how the original crew bedded the pipe all change the outcome.

That last step is the point of the whole exercise. A diagnosis turns "the line is old" into a specific problem at a specific spot, which is what makes a repair possible instead of a replacement.
What the camera finds decides the work. There is a real range of options, and full replacement sits at the far end of it.
Root removal deserves a note. Clearing roots and stopping there means the same roots return through the same gap. The opening has to be addressed or you are on a cycle.
The scope should follow the diagnosis, never the reverse. If someone quotes a full replacement before running a camera, they are guessing.
