Two plumbers can look at the same sewer line and give you two different answers. One wants to line it. One wants to burst it. Both quotes sound fair, but only one fits your pipe. That gap is where Houston homeowners lose money. Pick the wrong method and the repair fails early. Then you pay for the same line twice.
We have worked on Houston sewer lines since 2003. The choice between pipe lining and pipe bursting is rarely about which method is better. It comes down to the shape your old pipe is in right now. A cracked line and a collapsed line need different fixes. Clay soil and old cast iron make that call even harder here.

Choose pipe lining when the old pipe still holds its shape. Lining works on pipe that is cracked, leaking, or full of roots but has not caved in. A resin sleeve hardens inside the old pipe and forms a new one. Both methods follow published industry standards for trenchless rehabilitation.
Choose pipe bursting when the old pipe cannot be saved. Bursting fits lines that are collapsed, crushed, or badly offset at the joints. It also fits lines that need a wider pipe. A steel head breaks the old pipe apart. New pipe follows right behind it.
A camera inspection makes the call. Nobody can tell from the surface which method your line needs. Not you, and not us.

Pipe lining builds a new pipe inside your old one. Plumbers call it cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP. The old pipe stays in the ground and holds the new one in place.
Here is how a lining job runs:
The cleaning step is not optional. If debris stays behind, the liner cures right over it. That locks the problem in place.
One trade-off matters. The new pipe forms inside the old one, so the inside is slightly narrower than before. On most home sewer lines that small change does not hurt flow.
Our techs watch for a few things on camera before we approve a line for lining. We look for a pipe that still holds its round shape end to end.
Pipe bursting replaces your sewer line instead of repairing it. The old pipe never gets reused. You end up with a brand-new line in the same path.

That last point is the real difference. Lining strengthens what you already have. Bursting gets rid of it. If the pipe material itself is the problem, bursting solves it.
Bursting can also hold your current pipe size or go larger. Lining can never go larger.
The method does push soil aside as the old pipe breaks apart. That movement is normal, but it shapes where bursting works well and where it does not.
Both methods sound good on paper. The real decision comes from what rules each one out.
Lining needs a host pipe. If the old line cannot hold the liner in place, the method fails before it starts. These conditions rule lining out.

The belly problem catches people off guard. A liner fixes cracks and leaks well. It does nothing about slope. If your line sags, you will still get slow drains and backups after the work is done.
Bursting is not the safe default just because it replaces more. The method pushes soil aside as it works. That rules it out in several spots.
Other utilities run close by. Gas, water, or telecom lines near your sewer can take damage from the ground movement.
The line passes under a shallow foundation. Soil shift near a slab or footing is a real risk, not a small one.
Access pits would be hard to place. Tight lots, retaining walls, or a line under a garage slab can make the pits costly.
The line is blocked solid. If we cannot thread a cable through, the bursting head has no path to follow.
The lateral curves. Bursting is built for straight runs. Bends complicate the pull.
There is a middle option people rarely hear about. We can dig one short section to fix the worst damage, then line the rest. That hybrid keeps you from replacing 60 feet of pipe to solve a problem in six.
We recommend the smaller job when the camera supports it. A line with one bad spot and good pipe on either side does not need full replacement.
Everything comes back to one thing. Can your old pipe still do a job, or is it finished?

Pipe material tells you a lot on its own. Orangeburg is tar paper pipe, and it fails by shape. Old clay lines pull apart at the joints. Neither one gives a liner much to hold onto.
Both methods last for decades when the right one gets installed correctly. Neither is the better method in general. There is only the right method for your line.
The lowest quote is not the tell either. A liner sold for a line that needed bursting costs more in the end.
Our clay soil swells when it rains and shrinks when it dries. That cycle never stops here. Pipe joints get pulled apart a little more each season.
Trees finish the job. Live oaks, pecans, and pines send roots toward any moisture they find. A hairline crack at a joint is all they need. Once roots get in, they widen the gap every year.
We see this pattern most in older parts of the metro. Laterals in Humble, Aldine, and Spring show it first. Cast iron and clay lines put in during the 1970s and 1980s are the common failures.
Heavy rain adds one more clue. Groundwater pushes into open joints during wet weather. A camera run during or after a storm often shows leaks that stay hidden when the ground is dry.
