You already narrowed this down without realizing it. The word "dirty" is doing real work.
Dirty water came from your drain line. Something is pushing wastewater back into the tub. Clean water would mean something else entirely, a supply valve trickling fresh water in while the machine sits idle. Those are two different problems with two different people to call. Dirty water in your dishwasher means wastewater is getting back in from your drain line, and there are five places that usually happens. We have cleared Houston kitchen drains since 2003.
Below you will find how your dishwasher and sink share a pipe, a thirty-second test that tells you whether this is plumbing or appliance, and the causes on each side. We will also tell you plainly when to call someone other than us.

Fill your kitchen sink with several inches of water. Pull the stopper and watch.
Sink drains slowly — the problem is in the shared drain line. That is plumbing.
Sink drains normally — the problem sits closer to the dishwasher. That is usually the appliance or its installation.
Other drains in the house are slow too — look past the kitchen entirely.
One more thing. If a little water in the bottom is clean rather than dirty, that is a different problem with a different fix.
Look at what is sitting in the bottom of your dishwasher. The color tells you which direction it came from.
Dirty water came in through your drain line. It is cloudy, gray, sometimes with food particles in it. That is wastewater from your sink or disposal flowing backward into the tub. Something is either blocking the drain or letting water siphon back — which is what a high loop or air gap is installed to prevent.
Clean water came in through your supply line. Clear water that slowly rises while the machine sits unused usually means the inlet valve is not sealing shut. Water trickles in and has nowhere to go.
Those are two different failures with two different fixes. Dirty water is a drainage problem. Clean water is an appliance problem.

One note on what is normal. Some dishwashers leave a small amount of clean water near the sump area at the bottom. That is by design on certain models and nothing to worry about.
Pooled water is different. Cloudy or dirty water after a cycle is never normal, no matter what model you have.
Look under your kitchen sink. Your dishwasher's drain hose ties into either the sink drain pipe or the side of your garbage disposal.
From that junction on, both fixtures use the same pipe.
That single fact explains most of what happens next. When something blocks that shared line, water backs up. It does not choose a fixture. It rises until it finds the lowest opening available and comes out there.
In most kitchens, the bottom of the dishwasher tub sits lower than the sink basin. So the water fills your dishwasher instead of your sink.
That is also why some people see the opposite problem. Run the dishwasher, and the sink fills up instead. Same blockage, same shared line, just a different opening finding the water first.
Either way, the message is the same. If wastewater is showing up where it does not belong, the shared drain line is the first place to look.
Understanding that junction helps with the next section. Everything upstream of it belongs to the dishwasher. Everything downstream belongs to your plumbing.
Thirty seconds tells you which column your problem belongs in.
Fill the kitchen sink with several inches of water. Both basins if you have two.
Pull the stopper and watch. Note whether it swirls out quickly or crawls.
Run the disposal with cold water going. Listen for it laboring, and watch the other basin.
Here is what each result means.
The sink drains slowly. Your shared drain line is restricted. That is plumbing, and clearing it usually fixes the dishwasher too.
The sink drains normally while the dishwasher holds water. The blockage sits between the tub and that junction under the sink. That points to the appliance, its drain hose, or how it was installed.
Water backs up in the sink when the dishwasher drains. The shared line is blocked. Same answer as the first result, seen from a different angle.
Other drains in the house are slow too. Stop looking at the kitchen. Multiple slow fixtures point at your main line, which is a bigger problem than a dishwasher.
That last result is the one worth taking seriously. A dishwasher holding dirty water alongside a slow shower and a gurgling toilet is not a kitchen issue at all.
Five causes sit on our side of that junction.
A clogged kitchen sink drain. Grease and food narrow the line until water cannot move through it fast enough. This is the most common cause we find. Grease goes down warm and hardens as it cools, coating the pipe wall a little more each time.
A blocked garbage disposal. Your dishwasher may drain directly into the side of the disposal. If the disposal chamber is holding debris, the dishwasher has nowhere to send its water.
A clogged air gap. That small chrome cylinder next to your faucet is a backflow device. The dishwasher pumps water up to it, and gravity carries it down to the disposal. When that gravity line clogs or kinks, water either forces out of the air gap or backs into the tub.
No high loop on the drain hose. The hose is supposed to rise well above the drain connection before heading back down. That loop is what stops dirty sink water from siphoning backward. Plenty of dishwashers get installed without it, and the machine backfills every time the sink drains.
The knockout plug. Garbage disposals ship with a plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, for homes without one. If an installer forgets to remove it, your dishwasher cannot drain at all. Brand new disposal, immediate dishwasher problem — check this first.

These sit on the other side of that junction. A plumber is the wrong call for all five.
A clogged filter. Bottom center of the tub, under the lower rack. Food debris packs into the mesh and blocks flow. This one is homeowner-serviceable and worth checking before anything else.
A failed drain pump. The pump pushes water out of the tub. It should hum audibly during the drain cycle. If you start a drain cycle and hear nothing, that points here.
A failed check valve. Your dishwasher has a one-way valve in its discharge line to stop water coming back. After years of soap, food, and hot water, it stops sealing properly.
A kinked drain hose. Sometimes from age, sometimes from something stored under the sink pressing against it.
A leaking inlet valve. This one produces clean water, not dirty. If your standing water is clear and rises while the machine sits unused, this is your answer.
Here is our position on all of this.
If your sink drains normally, your filter is clean, and the disposal is clear, the problem is inside the appliance. Call an appliance repair technician, not a plumber.
We would rather tell you that now than send someone out to confirm it for you.
Some of these solve the problem outright. All of them help whoever comes out.
Where to stop: do not reach into pump openings, remove lower panels, or touch any wiring. That is an appliance technician's work, and there is live electrical behind those panels.
One more thing. Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They will not clear a shared kitchen line, and they leave whoever comes out working in caustic standing water.
Three local conditions make kitchen drains work harder in Houston.
Hard water. Minerals build up everywhere water sits or moves slowly. Scale collects inside the drain hose, on the filter mesh, and around valve seats. Everything narrows a little each year, and a line that was fine five years ago is not fine now.
Grease. Kitchen lines take more of it than any other drain in the house. It leaves the sink warm and liquid, then cools and hardens against the pipe wall. Layer by layer, the opening gets smaller.
Older pipe. Homes with cast iron kitchen branch lines have another problem. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, and the rough interior catches grease and debris that smooth pipe would carry away.
Those three combine. Hard water scale gives grease something to grab, and old cast iron gives both a head start.
Then there is the signal that means this is not a kitchen problem at all.
If your shower is slow, your toilet gurgles, and your dishwasher is holding dirty water, you are not looking at a kitchen drain. Multiple slow fixtures point at your main line.

A small amount of clean water near the sump can be normal on some models. Dirty or cloudy water is not, on any model. If what you are seeing is gray, murky, or has food particles in it, wastewater is backing in from your drain line.
Because they share the same drain line, and something past that junction is blocking it. Water backs up and comes out whichever opening it reaches first. It is the same problem as a dishwasher filling with dirty water, just showing up in a different place.
No. Standing water means it is not draining, so another cycle just recirculates wastewater and adds more. Bail it out, clean the filter, and find the cause before running it again.
Yes, and this catches a lot of people. Disposals ship with a plug sealing the dishwasher inlet for homes that do not have one. If the installer never removed it, the dishwasher has no path to drain.
Run the sink test first. If your kitchen sink drains slowly, call a plumber, because the shared drain line is the problem. If the sink drains normally and the filter is clean, the issue is inside the appliance and needs an appliance technician.
