Here is why your shower backs up when the toilet flushes, and the one test that tells you how serious it is. Neither fixture is broken. The problem sits downstream of both of them, in the pipe they share on the way out of your house.
When that pipe is blocked, a flush has nowhere to go. It comes back through the lowest opening it can find, and in your bathroom that is the clogged shower drain. What you are looking at is the system telling you it cannot empty.
Houston makes this worse in a specific way. Our homes sit on slabs with no basement and no floor drain below. There is nothing underneath to catch an overflow, so the lowest opening in the whole building is the shower pan you are standing in front of. With water use stopped, the level in your shower usually drops over the next while. That is the system finding equilibrium, not the problem solving itself. The blockage is exactly where it was. If sewage came up with it, wastewater backups carry a contamination risk worth keeping people away from.
Resist the urge to test it by flushing again. You already know what happens.
Every fixture in your house drains into a shared path on the way out to the sewer. Toilets, sinks, tub, washing machine, all of it converges.
When that path blocks, water backs up until it finds the first opening it can reach. Not the closest opening. The lowest one.
Your shower drain sits lower than your toilet, lower than your sinks, and usually lower than your tub. Gravity does not deliberate. Water rises to the lowest available exit and stops there.
There is a second reason it shows up in the shower first. A shower drain has a shallower trap than a toilet does. Less water sitting in the bend means less resistance to push past, so the shower gives way before anything else does.
Nothing is wrong with your shower. It is acting as a relief valve for a system under pressure, which is not a job anyone assigned it.
The toilet is not broken either. A flush is simply the single largest volume of water your house releases at once, so it is the event that reveals the problem. The blockage was there before the flush and will be there after.
Which fixture backs up, and in what order, tells us something before we arrive. A shower alone points one direction. A shower plus the tub plus a floor drain points somewhere further downstream.
You can narrow this down yourself before anyone arrives. The answer changes how urgent this is.
Go to a different part of the house, ideally another bathroom. Run a faucet or flush that toilet once. Then go look at your shower.

If the shower backs up again, the blockage is in your main line. Everything in the house drains through the spot that is blocked, which means every fixture is affected and every use of water makes it worse. In a Houston home that line usually runs under the slab or out through the yard.
If nothing happens, the blockage sits in the branch line serving that one bathroom. It is between those fixtures and the point where they join the main. Smaller job, smaller area, and the rest of the house still drains normally.
Both need a plumber. The difference is whether you are calling today or scheduling this week.
Do the test once. Do not keep running water to be certain, because confirming it a second time just adds volume to a system that already cannot cope.

The cause matters because it decides the fix. Here is what we find most often.
Tree roots. Live oaks, pines, and pecans send roots toward the moisture leaking from old joints. This is the most common cause of main line blockages in Houston.
Wipes and other non-flushables. Including the ones sold as flushable. They do not break down the way paper does.
Grease. It leaves the kitchen warm and liquid, then hardens somewhere downstream where it catches everything else.
A collapsed or bellied section. Older cast iron and clay lines sag or break, and debris piles up at the low point.
Pipe scale. Decades of buildup narrow an older line until something perfectly ordinary finally blocks it.
There is one cause that behaves differently. A blocked plumbing vent starves the system of air, which produces gurgling and slow drainage without a full backup. If you have been hearing gurgles for weeks with nothing backing up, that is worth mentioning when you call.
The fix follows the cause. A soft blockage often clears with a cable. Grease and scale coating the pipe wall need hydro jetting to actually come off. A collapsed section is a repair, not a cleaning, and no amount of drain cleaning will change that.
That is why what happens after clearing matters as much as the clearing itself.
The same blockage plays out differently here than it would somewhere else.
That first point is the one people underestimate. In a house with a basement, a main line backup usually appears at a floor drain in a utility space. Unpleasant, but contained. In a slab home the same event puts contaminated water on finished flooring in a room you use every day.
The last three explain why a Houston main line deserves a camera rather than just a cable. Clearing the blockage tells you the pipe is open. It does not tell you whether the pipe is bellied, cracked, or full of roots that will be back in four months.

Then the camera goes in. That second step is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters.
Clearing tells you the blockage is gone. The camera tells you why it was there. Roots at a joint, a bellied section holding water, scale narrowing the pipe, a crack letting soil in. Those are different findings with different answers, and none of them show up on a cable.
Without that footage you are not solving anything. You are scheduling the same phone call for a few months from now.
The sign to watch for is repetition. A main line that backs up once may have caught something unlucky. A main line that backs up twice in a year is telling you the blockage was a symptom rather than a cause.
Prevention is straightforward once you know what you have. Scheduled cleaning on the main line keeps roots cut back before they open a joint, and it keeps buildup from narrowing the pipe.
