You followed the directions. You waited the time on the label. The water still sits there.
If your sink drains slowly even after drain cleaner, there are four reasons it didn't work, and the most common one is that the product never got to the blockage. Before anything else, do not go buy a stronger one. That is the wrong next move for reasons we cover below.
We get called after the bottle more often than before it. What we find is usually something a chemical was never going to move. Below we cover why it failed, why the drain sometimes clears for a day and then closes again, and two things worth knowing before you try anything else.
Four reasons, in rough order of likelihood:
Do not buy a stronger product. Mixing two different cleaners can release toxic gas.
Picture what happens when you pour it in. The liquid meets standing water in the basin, then more standing water in the trap, then whatever residue already coats the pipe.
It gets weaker the whole way down. What leaves the bottle at full strength arrives at the blockage as a fraction of that, if it arrives at all.
Distance is the other half of it. These products are formulated to work on organic material near the drain opening, things like hair, soap scum, and toothpaste. That is a short reach by design.
If your clog sits past the P-trap, out in the horizontal run heading toward the wall, it is outside what the product was built to handle. Nothing about that is a failure on your part.
That is why you can follow the label exactly, wait the full time, flush with hot water, and watch the sink drain exactly as slowly as it did before.
Sometimes the product does reach the clog, and the sink drains fine that evening. Then a few days later you are back where you started.
Here is what happened. The cleaner opened a narrow path through the blockage instead of removing it. Water found that path and flowed. The clog never left. Grease and buildup still coat the wall, and new debris catches on them the same way it did before.
Now there is a hole in the middle of a mass of hair, grease, and buildup. Debris catches on the edges of that opening every time you run the tap. Within days it closes back up.
Each round makes it worse. You have added chemical residue to what was already there, and the material that stayed behind has more to catch on than before.
Watch for this pattern. The drain clears quickly, works for a short while, then slows again, and the good stretch gets shorter every time.
That pattern means the clog needs to come out rather than be tunneled through. No amount of chemical changes that.
When someone tells us it cleared for two days and came back, we already know roughly what we'll find.
Drain cleaners are built for organic material. Plenty of what blocks a drain is not organic at all.
Mineral scale. Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on the pipe wall. A product designed to break down hair and soap does nothing to them. Houston has hard water, so this shows up often here.
Solid objects. A bottle cap, a ring, a piece of a toothbrush. Nothing dissolves these, and pouring more liquid past them only fills the pipe.
Root intrusion. Roots enter a line out in the yard, well beyond anything poured into a sink upstairs.
Grease that has re-solidified. Common in kitchen lines. It goes down warm, cools in the horizontal run, and sets into a layer that a diluted cleaner cannot move.
Older homes stack the odds further. Cast iron drain lines have rough interior walls, and that roughness holds every one of the above in place.
Knowing which kind you have explains the failure. It also points at what will actually work, which is not another bottle.

The natural next step after a product fails is a stronger product. Stop there. This is the point where a slow drain turns into something worse.
Never mix two different drain cleaners. Combining an acid-based product with a bleach or ammonia-based one can release toxic gas. That is not a pipe problem. That is a hazard in an enclosed bathroom or under a kitchen sink where you are standing.
Even a second round of the same product is a bad trade. You now have twice the chemical sitting in a pipe that already will not drain, going nowhere, doing nothing.
There is damage you cannot see happening too. Repeated exposure works on the rubber seals and O-rings in your drain assembly, and on older metal pipe. Houston homes with cast iron drain lines are the least able to absorb that.
Think about what the first round told you. It did not work because it could not reach the clog, or because the clog was never the type it treats. More of the same product does not change either of those facts.
The answer is not a stronger chemical. It is a tool that goes where the problem is.
Half the advice on slow sinks tells you to remove the P-trap and clean it out. That is normally reasonable homeowner work. It is the wrong move right now.
The P-trap is the U-shaped pipe under your sink, and it holds standing water by design. If you poured a cleaner in and the drain never cleared, that product is sitting in the trap.
Unscrew those slip nuts and it comes out. Onto your hands, into the cabinet, across the floor. It is still caustic, and it is now mixed with whatever was already in there.
If you are going to open it anyway, flush the drain with plenty of water first and let it sit. Wear gloves and eye protection. Put a bucket underneath before anything turns.
The better move is to leave it and make one phone call.
Tell us you used a cleaner before we arrive. It is the single most useful thing you can say, because anyone opening that line needs to know what is in the water.
Two situations produce a slow drain with nothing in the pipe to dissolve. In both, no product was ever going to help.
A blocked vent. Water going down a pipe needs air behind it. That air comes from vent pipes running up through your roof. When one blocks with leaves or debris, the drain pulls a vacuum and holds itself back.
The tell is how it empties. A vented drain runs steadily. A starved one slows, surges, then slows again, usually with gurgling.
The main line. If more than one fixture is slow, the problem is in a line they share. Your sink is reporting it, not causing it.
In Houston that usually starts underground. Our clay soil swells and shrinks with moisture, and that movement works pipe joints apart over the years. Roots find the openings. Older neighborhoods add cast iron lines corroding from the inside.
Before you assume it is this sink, check:
If two or more are slow, stop working on the sink.
One failed round tells you something useful. The clog is either out of reach or the wrong type, and neither of those changes with a second bottle.
