Rain explains part of this. It does not explain the wet corner that is still there in August, three weeks after the last storm.
Water pools around your foundation after rain because of how the ground moves it. But if that same spot is wet when it hasn't rained in a week, rain was never the cause. Something is putting water there on its own schedule.
The foundation calls we take in August are rarely about rain. It has not rained. Something else is putting water there. Below we cover the sources that put water next to a Houston slab year-round, starting with one most homeowners have never thought about—including problems that a proper exterior drain cleaning can uncover and resolve.
Rain is not the only thing that puts water next to a foundation. When the same spot stays wet in dry weather, check these:
Your AC condensate line. A Houston system pulls water from the air all day for most of the year. If that line discharges at the slab, it runs there every day you use the AC.
An irrigation line. Sprinkler lines often run along the foundation, and a cracked one leaks whenever the system cycles.
A hose bib. A failing outdoor faucet drips down the wall and into the soil at its base.
A water or sewer line. A break under or near the slab pushes moisture up through the ground, and confirming it takes a drain and sewer inspection.
Rain-driven pooling has its own causes, mostly grading and drainage.
After a storm, water moves across the surface toward the lowest point it can find. Sometimes that point is the ground against your house. Settled grading, downspouts that end too close to the wall, and clay soil that sheds water sideways all send it there.

Here is the test that splits the problem in two. Wait three dry days and look at the same spot again.
If it has dried out, you are dealing with drainage and grading. If it is still wet after three days with no rain, something is feeding it. Everything below is about that second case.
Cooling your house means pulling moisture out of the air. That happens every hour your system runs, and in Houston it runs for most of the year.
All that water has to go somewhere. It leaves through a condensate line, and where that line ends was a decision someone made at installation.
Plenty of them end a foot or two from the slab. Which means that all summer, every day, water is discharging against your foundation on purpose.
Three things to check:
We have followed a condensate line to a wet corner of a Houston foundation more than once. It had been doing that for years.
The fix is not complicated. The line gets rerouted so it discharges well away from the house instead of beside it.
Sprinkler systems almost always run a line around the perimeter of the house. That is how water reaches the beds against your walls.
Those lines sit shallow, in the same clay soil that moves with every wet and dry cycle. A crack in one leaks only when that zone is running, which is why the wet spot seems to appear and disappear on its own.
The timing gives it away. Wet the morning after your system runs, dry by evening, wet again the next morning it cycles. Pull up your controller schedule and compare it to when the spot shows up.
Heads cause the other version of this. One that has shifted or a riser that broke off sprays the wall directly, and the water runs straight down into the soil at the base.
There is a simple way to confirm it. Turn the irrigation system off for a week and watch the spot. If it dries out and stays dry, you have your answer.
Two more sources sit close to the house, and both are easy to miss.
An outdoor faucet that drips sends water down the wall and into the soil at its base, a little at a time, every day. Worse, a failing hose bib often leaks inside the wall rather than at the handle. Nothing looks wrong from outside while water runs into the framing and the ground below.
The other one runs underground. Your water service line carries water from the meter at the street to the house. A break anywhere along that run has to surface somewhere, and sometimes that somewhere is beside your foundation.
Both leave the same fingerprint on your water bill. It climbs, and nothing about how you use water changed.
There is a free test that settles it:
Houston homes sit on concrete slabs. Your supply and drain lines run underneath that concrete, in soil you cannot see or reach.
A break down there does not spill onto a floor. It saturates the ground under your house, and that ground has nowhere to drain. The moisture works its way outward and up, and it often surfaces right at the edge of the slab.
That is why a wet strip along the foundation is sometimes a plumbing problem rather than a drainage one.
Signs that separate this from everything above:
None of those are drainage symptoms. They are the sound and feel of water moving where it should not be.
Finding it does not require digging. Leak detection equipment and a camera locate the break first, so nobody opens concrete guessing.
This is the one on this page that does not improve on its own. A slow leak under a slab gets worse, and the soil stays wet the entire time.
Houston clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries out. Everything sitting on that soil moves with it, including your slab. Expansive soil is a documented design problem across the state.
A foundation resting on ground that is saturated at one corner and drying at another is not resting evenly. Rain does that for a few days and then stops. A leaking line does it every day, all year, in the same spot.
That is the real difference between the two halves of this page. Rain is periodic. A water source is continuous, and continuous is what wears on a slab.
One thing worth saying plainly. We are plumbers, not foundation contractors. If your slab has already moved, that is a different specialist and a different conversation.
What we can do is find the water and stop it. Removing the source is the part that has to happen first either way.
Timing sorts this faster than anything else. Pay attention to when the spot is wet, not just that it is.

Run down that list before you call anyone. The answer usually falls out in a minute.
Two of them can be true at once. A yard that drains poorly and a condensate line ending at the slab will keep the same corner wet from two directions, and fixing one leaves you puzzled about why the spot is still there.

Something is putting water there on its own schedule. The usual sources are an AC condensate line discharging at the slab, a leaking irrigation line, a failing hose bib, or a break in a water or sewer line. Rain-driven pooling dries within a couple of days.
Well away from the foundation, not beside it. Many lines were installed ending a foot or two from the slab, which puts water against your house every day the system runs. The line can be rerouted to discharge somewhere that does not feed your foundation.
A leaking line keeps soil saturated in one spot every time that zone runs, which is the uneven moisture that stresses a slab. Look for a wet patch the morning after your system cycles. Turning the system off for a week confirms it.
Warm spots on the floor, the sound of running water with everything shut off, and a water bill climbing with no change in use. Ground that stays wet along the foundation in dry weather points the same direction. A sewer line break adds odor and one greener patch of grass.
Shut off every fixture and appliance that uses water, then look at your meter at the street. Most have a small dial or triangle that spins whenever water is flowing. If it moves with everything off, water is escaping somewhere.
