It rained hard last night. This morning, water is still sitting in your driveway. The drain that used to swallow it is doing nothing. We hear about this often from Houston homeowners, usually right after a heavy storm.
Sometimes a drain quits slowly over months. Other times it stops working overnight. Either way, that water has to go somewhere. The nearest low spot is often your garage or your slab. Here is what causes a driveway drain to stop draining, in plain terms, so you know whether this is a quick cleanout or a real repair.
We start with the three parts of a driveway drain that can fail. Then we walk through the six most common causes, and why they hit harder here than in most places. You also get a simple hose test that shows where the problem sits, plus the signs it is time to call for help.
A driveway drain stops draining for one of six reasons. Leaves, dirt, and silt pack the grate and the channel below it. Sediment hardens inside the buried outlet pipe. Tree roots grow in through the pipe joints. The outlet pipe cracks, sags, or collapses. The outlet where that pipe empties gets buried or floods during a storm. Or the drain is simply too small for the water reaching it, often because gutter downspouts feed straight into it.
Only the first one is a surface problem. You can clear it with a scoop and a hose. The other five sit underground, and finding them takes a camera.
Your driveway drain is really three parts working together. When water stops moving, one of them has failed. Knowing which part is which saves you from guessing.
The grate. This is the metal or plastic cover you can see and step on. It catches leaves and larger debris before they go down.
The channel or catch basin. Right under the grate sits a trough or a box. A long trough across the driveway is a channel drain. A square box under a downspout is a catch basin. Both hold water for a moment and let heavier dirt settle.
The outlet line. This is the buried pipe that carries water away from your driveway. Around Houston, it usually ends at a curb, a roadside ditch, or a storm inlet.
Two of those three parts are invisible from your driveway. That is why so many homeowners clean the grate, see no change, and assume the drain is beyond repair. The grate was never the problem.
Here are the six causes we find, roughly in the order we find them.
Houston sits on heavy clay soil. Clay soaks up water slowly, then swells as it takes on moisture. That means it absorbs even less as a storm keeps going. Most of the rain never soaks in at all.
Our ground is also very flat. There is little natural slope to pull water away from your property. Your driveway drain does work that gravity handles on its own in hillier places. When it clogs, water has almost nowhere else to go.
Then there is how our rain arrives. Storms here drop a lot of water in a short time. Fast-moving runoff picks up far more silt than a slow, steady rain does. All of it heads for the nearest opening.
Storms cause a second problem. Ditches and bayous fill up during heavy rain. When the water outside is higher than the water in your pipe, nothing drains. It may even push back toward your driveway.
Older areas add one more factor. Mature trees in neighborhoods like Spring, Humble, and The Woodlands send roots looking for moisture. Buried drain lines are an easy target.
Before you call anyone, run this test. It takes about ten minutes and tells you where the trouble sits.
Start by clearing what you can see. Lift the grate, scoop out the leaves and mud, and vacuum or sweep the channel clean. Then put a garden hose in the drain and turn it on full. Watch what happens.
Water runs away freely. The clog was on the surface, and you just fixed it. Put the grate back and keep an eye on it after the next storm.
Water backs up and fills the trench. The blockage is in the buried outlet pipe. Cleaning the grate again will not help.
Water drains, but slowly. Sediment is building up inside the line. The pipe is still open, but it is closing in. This is the easiest stage to correct.
Water never reaches the outlet. Find where the pipe should empty and look for flow. If nothing comes out, the line is blocked, broken, or its exit is buried.
Three of those four answers point underground. A camera inspection of your drain line shows the cause instead of guessing at it.
Plenty of driveway drain problems are yours to fix. Here is what works, in order.
A few limits are worth respecting.
Do not sweep driveway debris into the drain. Storm lines empty into ditches and bayous, not a treatment plant.
Do not force high pressure into a pipe you cannot see. If the line is cracked, pressure makes the damage worse.
Never connect driveway water to a sanitary sewer cleanout. Storm water and sewage run in separate systems, and mixing them breaks city rules.
One note on snakes. A small hand auger usually fails in a channel drain. The cable bends in the open trough instead of pushing against the clog.

If the line is packed with hardened silt, hydro jetting for packed drain lines scours it back to bare pipe. High-pressure water cuts through material a snake rides over. If roots have moved in, we cut them out mechanically and check the joints they entered through. If the pipe itself is broken, no cleaning will help. That section needs repair or replacement.
We will also tell you when it is not our work. If your driveway slopes the wrong way or the surface has settled, that is a grading and concrete job. We would rather say so than sell you a cleaning that fixes nothing.

Start by lifting the grate and scooping out the debris underneath. A wet-dry vacuum pulls the fine silt a scoop leaves behind. Then run a garden hose into the drain. If the water runs off freely, you are done. If it backs up, the blockage is in the buried pipe and needs a professional.
Yes, roots are one of the most common causes of a blocked outlet line. They find moisture through pipe joints and hairline cracks, then spread inside the pipe. Once established, they catch passing debris and build a dam. Older neighborhoods with mature trees see this most often.
The drain on your property is your responsibility. In Houston, property owners must keep abutting ditches clear of debris so water can flow. Culverts under residential driveways are also the owner's to replace when they are damaged or undersized. The city maintains the public storm sewer, inlets, and larger ditches.
Most driveway drains empty at a curb, a roadside ditch, or a nearby storm inlet. That water travels to a bayou, not to a treatment plant. This is why nothing but rain should ever go into it.
