Here is why it matters more than it sounds. A charging brick with the wrong port costs a few dollars to replace and takes ten seconds. An outlet with the wrong port is wired into your wall.
Some models include both port types. That is a reasonable hedge if your household still runs older devices that use USB-A cables.
If you are opening a wall, put in the connector that will still be current in five years.
A USB outlet is physically deeper than the receptacle it replaces. Those electronics take up space, and that space has to come from somewhere.
Behind every outlet is an electrical box. Boxes have a volume limit based on how many wires and devices they hold, and that limit is a safety rule rather than a suggestion. A deeper device going into a box that is already full does not fit.
Older Houston homes run into this more often. Boxes installed decades ago tend to be shallower than what goes into new construction, and they may already be crowded with wiring from work done since.

A plain receptacle is a passive device. Metal contacts, screws, nothing that thinks. When a surge comes through the line, it passes on to whatever is plugged in, and the outlet itself is usually fine.
A USB outlet is different. Those electronics behind the faceplate are exactly what a surge damages. Add electronics to your walls and you have added something that can be knocked out by weather.

What that looks like in practice is odd at first. The standard sockets keep working normally while the USB ports go dead, because the passive half survived and the powered half did not. The device charging at the time is at risk too.
Protection belongs at the panel rather than the outlet. Whole-home surge protection catches the surge before it reaches anything downstream, which covers your USB outlets, your HVAC equipment, and everything else with a circuit board in it.
That is worth thinking about before you add electronics to your walls, not after a storm takes them out.
