So the more useful question is not whether it fits. Can you put LED bulbs in existing fixtures and have them last? That depends on four things: the base, the size, whether the fixture is enclosed, and whether a dimmer is involved.
Most of the LED calls we take in Houston are not about bulbs. They are about dimmers that were installed before LEDs existed. Below we cover what to check before you buy, why LEDs fail early in certain fixtures, and the two situations where this stops being a bulb swap, including when LED lighting installation is the better call.

Here is what you will find in a Houston home:
A pin bulb will not go into a screw socket, and a screw bulb will not go into a pin socket. Adapters exist for some combinations, but they add a failure point and change how the bulb sits in the fixture.
An LED marketed as a replacement is not always the same size as what it replaces. The base matches. The body may not.
That shows up in tight spaces. A bulb that sits a half inch longer can stick out past a shade, press against a glass cover, or refuse to seat properly in a recessed housing. The shape code on the box tells you diameter but not length. Measure the space or hold the old bulb against the new one before you buy a case of them.
Light direction is the other difference. Many LEDs throw light in one direction rather than in every direction like the bulb before them. In a lamp with a shade, that can leave the ceiling dark and the tabletop bright.
Appearance matters where the bulb shows. In an open chandelier or an exposed pendant, the shape of the bulb is part of the fixture.
LEDs run cooler than the bulbs they replace. They are also more sensitive to the heat around them, which surprises people.
An enclosed fixture traps that heat against the bulb. The electronics inside degrade faster than they should, and the bulb fails long before the hours printed on the box. This is the most common reason an LED dies early.

The fix is on the box. Look for a bulb explicitly rated for enclosed fixtures, and skip the ones that are not.
Houston adds something the packaging does not account for. Recessed can lights sit in your ceiling with their housings up in the attic. That attic runs far hotter than the room below for most of the year, so the bulb is working against heat from above and trapped heat around it at the same time.

Outdoor fixtures need one more check. Look for a damp or wet location rating, which matters more in our humidity than it would somewhere dry.
Two things have to line up for a dimmer to work with LEDs. The bulb has to be dimmable, and the dimmer has to be built for LEDs. Getting one right and not the other is where the trouble starts.
Older dimmers were designed around incandescent bulbs, which drew a heavy electrical load. An LED draws a small fraction of that. The dimmer is trying to regulate something far lighter than it was built for, and it cannot do it smoothly.

People chase this with bulbs. They buy a different brand, then another, and the flicker follows them. The bulb was rarely the problem.
The fix is an LED-compatible dimmer. That means replacing the switch itself, which is work behind the wall plate rather than a trip to the store.
A fluorescent fixture has a part a screw-in fixture does not: a ballast. It regulates the current the tube needs, and it sits between your wiring and the lamp holders.
That changes the answer. Some LED tubes are built to run off the existing ballast, so they drop in like a bulb. Others require the ballast to be bypassed, which means rewiring the inside of the fixture.
Mismatching those two is where it goes wrong. Putting a tube meant for direct wiring into a fixture that still has a live ballast is a real hazard, not a performance issue.
Ballasts also fail on their own schedule. That is part of why people convert in the first place, and it is worth knowing before you decide whether to convert or replace.
This is the one place in this topic where the answer is not a trip to the store. Rewiring a fixture is licensed work.
One more thing before you pull the old tubes. Fluorescent lamps contain small amounts of mercury and should not go in your household trash. Check for a recycling drop-off or a household hazardous waste collection.
Watts measure energy used, not brightness. That confused nobody for a century because incandescent bulbs were consistent, so 60 watts meant a known amount of light.
LEDs broke that link. They produce the same light for a fraction of the energy, which is why packaging says "60-watt equivalent" instead of just listing watts.
Lumens are the number that actually matters. It measures light output, and it is the fair comparison between any two bulbs.

Treat that as orientation rather than a spec. Output varies between products, and the lumen figure is printed on every box.
The wattage limit on your fixture is about heat, not brightness. An LED bright enough to replace a 100-watt bulb draws far less than the limit on a 60-watt fixture.
Color temperature is the last piece. Measured in Kelvin, lower numbers read warm and yellow, higher numbers read cool and white. Mixing them in one room is the most common regret after a whole-house swap, so pick one number and stay with it.
For most fixtures in most homes, a bulb swap is the whole job. Nothing else is needed and nothing else is worth paying for.

Fixtures built for LEDs outperform old fixtures with LED bulbs in them. That is not a sales line. It comes from lighting guidance from the Department of Energy, which points to better efficiency and longer life from purpose-built fixtures.
Recessed cans are the clearest case here. If the same two or three keep failing, an LED retrofit housing solves what a fourth bulb will not.
