The toilet dye test. Drop a little food coloring into the tank of each toilet. Wait about twenty minutes without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, that flapper is leaking. A running toilet is one of the most common causes of a bill that jumps for no clear reason.
Both checks answer one question: is water leaving the system? Neither tells you where. A meter that keeps moving could point to a wall, a slab, a yard line, or a fixture. That is the part we sort out with the tools.
One thing to skip: do not cut into drywall to look around. Wiring, conduit, and gas lines share those cavities. A blind cut risks a much bigger problem than the leak you started with.
