Why Install a Smart Panel Upgrade?

Using Current Transformer (CT) clamps or sensors on a residential electrical panel offers benefits like real-time energy monitoring, improved EV charger management (preventing overloads), optimizing solar self-consumption, and identifying energy waste for cost savings, all done non-invasively by clamping around wires to measure current and detect usage patterns. They provide data to smart panels or home energy management systems for better control, preventing tripped breakers and maximizing solar efficiency.

Key Benefits of a Smart Panel

  • Non-Invasive Monitoring: CT clamps wrap around main wires, measuring current without cutting into the electrical system, making installation safe and easy.
  • Real-Time Data & Cost Savings: Provides live data on your home's total energy consumption (amps), helping you identify usage spikes and reduce utility bills.
  • Smart EV Charging: Balances EV charger load with your home's total draw, helping customers with information to help prevent breaker trips by reducing charge rate if near capacity.
  • Solar Optimization: Detects excess solar energy being exported, allowing you to use it for EV charging or other purposes instead of sending it back.
  • Early Problem Detection: While thermal imaging is better for heat, CT data can show unusual current patterns indicating potential issues like overloaded circuits.
  • Improved System Management: Integrates with most panels to offer granular control, optimizing energy use and maximizing efficiency.

How It Works

  1. Magnetic Field: Current flowing through a wire creates a magnetic field.
  2. Transformation: The CT sensor detects this field and converts it into a proportional, measurable secondary current or voltage.
  3. Calculation: This data is used with grid voltage to calculate power (watts) and energy (kWh) for monitoring and management.

Applications

  • Home Energy Monitors (HEMs)
  • Smart Electrical Panels
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Systems
