The honest answer starts with a question back. Do you have a sump pump at all?
Most Sugar Land homes do not. The pump most people picture sits in a pit dug into a basement floor, and our homes are built on slabs. No basement means no pit and no pump.
If you do have one, and you rely on it, then yes. A battery backup is worth having here. The reason is specific to the Gulf Coast. Our worst water comes from hurricanes and tropical storms, and those are the same events that knock the power out. The hours you need that pump running are the hours the grid is most likely down.

Start here before anything else. A lot of advice on this topic assumes a house you probably do not own.
The classic sump pump sits in a pit cut into a basement floor. Groundwater collects in that pit, and the pump sends it back outside before it reaches the floor. That setup solves a basement problem.
Sugar Land homes are built on slabs. There is no basement, no floor to dig into, and nowhere for that kind of pit to go. Most homes here have no sump pump at all. The clay soil and high water table that make basements impractical here are the same conditions that lead people to ask about sump pumps in the first place.
That is not a gap in your house. A slab home does not have the problem a basement pump was designed to solve. Nothing is missing.
Here is the simple check. Have you ever seen a covered basin in a garage, a crawl space, or the yard, with a power cord and a pipe running out of it? If not, you almost certainly do not have a pump.
If that describes you, this question does not apply. The next section covers what Sugar Land homes do have, and one of those is worth knowing about.
Pumps do show up around here. They just do a different job than a basement pump. Here are the four possibilities.
A drainage sump basin. Some properties collect runoff from French drains or surface drains into a basin, then pump it further from the house. These show up on low-lying lots and along long driveways where water has nowhere to go on its own.
A crawl space pump. Older pier-and-beam homes sit above a crawl space, and some of those crawl spaces take on water. A pump keeps that space from staying wet.
A sewage ejector pump. This one handles waste rather than rainwater. If a bathroom, laundry, or sink sits below the level of your sewer line, an ejector pump lifts what goes down those drains up to the main line. Converted garages and additions are the usual places to find one.
Nothing at all. This is the most common answer in Sugar Land, and it is fine. A slab home with good grading and working gutters often needs no pump anywhere.
Not sure which you have? Look for a basin with a lid on it. There will be a power cord going in and a discharge pipe going out. Check the garage, the utility area, any crawl space, and low spots in the yard.
Most people worry about the pump breaking. That is not usually what goes wrong.
The pump fails because it loses power. The motor is fine, the float is fine, and none of it matters without electricity reaching the unit.
Now think about when you need that pump most. Hurricanes and tropical storms bring our heaviest water, and those are the same events that take the grid down. High wind, saturated ground, trees on lines.
So the hours the pump matters most are the hours it is least likely to be running. That overlap is the whole argument for a backup.
A pump with no power is a basin quietly filling while everyone in the house is dealing with the storm. Nobody is standing over it watching the water rise.
This is why the answer is different here than it is up north. In a climate where the pump runs on ordinary rainfall, power and water rarely fail together. On the Gulf Coast they arrive as one event.
One of these pumps deserves more attention than the others. A sewage ejector pump does not move rainwater. It moves waste.
Here is why that changes things. Your sewer line leaves the house at a fixed depth. Any fixture sitting below that level cannot drain by gravity. The ejector pump lifts what goes down those drains up to where the main line can carry it away.
Take the power away and nothing lifts. Waste has one place left to go, which is back up through the fixture it just came from.
That is a different problem than a wet garage floor. It is a health hazard and a cleanup, in a room you were using an hour ago.
If your home has a bathroom, laundry, or sink below grade, this is the pump to think hardest about. Converted garages and room additions are the usual spots.

That last one is worth checking today. Many ejector pumps have an alarm that sounds when the basin fills too high. An alarm that has never been tested is not doing anything for you.

Four ways to handle this. Each one trades something.
A battery backup pump. A second pump sits alongside the first, wired to a battery. When power drops, it takes over. The tradeoff is runtime. Batteries last only so long into an outage, and they need replacing on a schedule whether you have used them or not.
A water-powered backup. This one runs on your municipal water pressure instead of a battery. Nothing to charge and nothing to replace. It only works while you still have water pressure, so it depends on your supply staying up during the event.
A whole-home generator. This covers the pump along with everything else in the house. It is a much larger project than a backup pump, and it is a different conversation with different costs.
An alarm. Not a backup at all, but worth naming. An alarm tells you the basin is filling when it should not be. It cannot fix anything, and it can get you to the problem before the water reaches the floor.
One thing applies to all four. A backup you have never tested is not a backup. Whatever you put in, check it before storm season starts rather than during the storm itself.
