There is a corner of the yard that never dries out. The grass is thin, the ground stays soft, and you have started walking around it out of habit. Someone told you a French drain. Someone else said a yard drain.
French drain vs. yard drain, and which does your Sugar Land yard need? They collect water in different ways, so the right one depends on what your water is actually doing. One handles a puddle. The other handles soggy ground.
Before either, there is a check worth running. A yard that stays wet without rain may not have a drainage problem at all. That comes first, then both systems explained, then how to match one to your yard. The last sections cover what our clay and flat ground do to the choice.
They collect water in two different ways.
A yard drain is a grate set into the ground at a low spot. Water pools there, runs through the grate, and enters a buried pipe. That pipe carries it somewhere else. It collects at one point, where you put it.
A French drain is a perforated pipe sitting in a gravel-filled trench. Water moves through the soil, into the gravel, and into the pipe. It collects along the whole length of the trench rather than at a single spot. That last step is slower in Houston's clay than in sandy soil.
That difference sorts most yards. One visible puddle in a known low spot points to a yard drain. A wide area that stays soggy for days points to a French drain.
One thing to check first. If your ground stays wet when it has not rained, neither system is your answer yet. That usually means water is coming from somewhere other than the sky.
Rain water dries up. Water from a broken pipe does not.
That is the whole test. If your wet spot is still wet after a dry week, something underground is feeding it.

Any one of those is worth a look before anyone digs a trench.
Here is why the order matters. Build drainage over a leaking pipe and you have covered the problem with gravel and fabric. The wet spot may even improve for a while, which is the worst outcome. You stop looking, and the leak keeps going.
A camera on the sewer line or a leak check on the supply line settles it. One visit, and then you know which problem you actually have.
A yard drain takes standing water off the surface.
The grate sits at the low point, level with the ground. Water finds that spot on its own, because water always does. It runs through the grate into a pipe buried below, and that pipe carries it away to a discharge point.
Some setups use a catch basin instead of a plain grate. A basin is a small sump under the opening that holds leaves, soil, and sediment. Debris settles there instead of moving into your pipe. You clean the basin out now and then, which beats clearing a clogged line later.
Best for: one puddle you can point at. A dip in the lawn that holds water for a day after rain. The spot at the base of a downspout that never quite dries.
The limit is in how it works. A yard drain collects at one place only. Water an arm's length away from the grate stays where it is.
So if you can walk out and stand in the exact spot the water collects, this is probably your system.
Here is the pattern most lines follow.
Day one. The line is clear and water moves normally. The root mass is gone. The opening those roots came through is exactly as it was.
The first months. Fine roots find their way back toward the opening. Moisture is leaking out of it, and that is what they follow. Nothing shows up inside your house yet.
Somewhere in the first year or two. Growth reaches the point where it catches paper and grease. A drain starts running slow. This is usually the first sign you notice.
After that. Without a repair, the cycle repeats. Each round of clearing tends to hold for less time, because the opening keeps widening as roots thicken inside it.
That last part is the one to watch. Track the dates.
If your first clearing held two years and the next held one, that trend is telling you something. Shortening intervals mean the pipe is getting worse, not that your plumber is doing worse work.
Keep the service dates somewhere you can find them. That history is the clearest evidence you have about what is happening underground.
A French drain pulls water out of the soil itself.
The build is a trench with a perforated pipe in it, packed around with gravel and wrapped in fabric. Water in the surrounding soil moves toward the gravel, because gravel offers less resistance than packed dirt. From there it enters the pipe through the perforations and flows away.
The difference that matters is where it collects. A yard drain takes water at one opening. A French drain takes water along its entire length, anywhere the trench runs.
Best for: a wide area that stays spongy rather than one puddle. A slope that sheds water toward your house. Soil that stays saturated after rain instead of draining.
It also handles water you cannot see. Ground can be waterlogged below the surface with nothing standing on top. A grate never sees that water. A French drain sits down in it.
The trade-off is scale. This is a trench across part of your yard, not a fitting in one spot. It also needs somewhere lower to send the water, which matters more here than most places.
Find your situation.
One puddle in a known low spot. Yard drain. You can stand where the water goes, so put the grate there.
Water pooling at a downspout. Yard drain, but try extending the downspout first. Moving the water ten feet away sometimes ends it.
A wide area that stays spongy for days. French drain. There is no single point to drain, so the trench does the collecting.
Water running off a slope toward your house. French drain, set between the slope and the foundation. It intercepts the water before it arrives.
Water on a patio or driveway. Neither one. A channel drain is the fitting for paved surfaces, and it runs along the edge.
Wet ground with no rain. Go back to the first section. That is a plumbing question.
Most yards are not one situation. A house can have a low spot in the back lawn and a slope pushing water at the foundation. Those are two different problems and often two different fixes.
So walk the yard after the next real rain and watch where the water actually goes. Where it stands, where it runs, and where it stays soft afterward. That walk tells you more than any guide can.
Two things here work against any drainage plan.
Clay soil. Fort Bend County sits on expansive clay. Water does not soak through it well, so it sits on top or saturates the layer near the surface. Both systems work harder here than they would in sandy soil.
Flat ground. Much of this area has very little natural fall. Drainage moves water by gravity, so a flat lot gives it little to work with.
Rain arrives all at once. We get heavy rainfall in short stretches rather than steady drizzle. A system sized for average rain gets overwhelmed by the storms that actually cause problems.
Lots sit close together. In master-planned neighborhoods, your discharge point may be near a property line.
That last one deserves care. Water you move off your yard has to go somewhere, and it should not be your neighbor's yard. Drainage easements and local rules govern where water may be released. Check what applies to your property before anyone digs.
The flat ground point is the one that surprises people. A French drain needs a discharge point lower than the trench. On a flat lot, that low point may not exist, which changes what is possible.
