Search this problem and most answers point you to a dry well. In Sugar Land, that advice deserves a second look. A dry well works by letting water soak into the surrounding soil, and our clay takes water slowly. Built here, one can fill during a real rain and simply sit full.
Draining a yard with no slope comes down to a simple idea. Flat ground will not move water on its own, so you either build a path or you pump it. Below we cover which approaches hold up in local soil, one connection you must never make, and how to tell when that wet patch is not a drainage problem at all — or when it's time to bring in professional landscape drain services.
Flat ground doesn't drain itself. Water needs a path you create, or a pump to move it. Four approaches work without natural grade:
A common recommendation is a dry well, which stores water underground until soil absorbs it. In Sugar Land's heavy clay, absorption is slow, and a dry well may not keep up with real rain.
One thing to rule out first: a wet spot that never dries may be a leaking sewer line rather than a drainage problem.
Three things stack up against you in Sugar Land, and none of them are your fault.
The land is genuinely flat. Drainage advice written elsewhere assumes there is somewhere lower on your property to send water. On plenty of lots here, there is not. That single fact rules out several of the standard fixes before you start.
Then there is the soil. Our clay absorbs water slowly and holds it near the surface long after the rain stops. Sandy ground drinks a downpour. Clay sheds it, and what does not run off sits there. That is why a yard can still be soft three days later under a clear sky.
Slab foundations add the reason it matters. Your house sits directly on the ground, so standing water is not just a lawn problem. It is water pooling against the structure and soaking into the soil your foundation and your buried pipes rest in.
There is also timing. Through a wet stretch, the ground is already full when the next rain arrives. Nothing soaks in because there is no room left, and the same low spot floods on a much smaller rainfall than it would in July.

Regrading or cutting a swale builds the fall your yard does not have. A swale is a shallow shaped channel that carries water across the surface to somewhere you have chosen. It is the least mechanical answer and the one with least to go wrong later.
A French drain is a perforated pipe in a gravel trench. It still needs fall, roughly an inch of drop every eight to ten feet, and it needs somewhere lower to release. On a flat lot, finding that release point is the hard part, not digging the trench.
Catch basins collect water at the low spots and carry it in solid pipe rather than through soil. Useful when you have two or three specific places that pond.
A sump pump is what you use when gravity genuinely has nowhere to go. It works, but it needs power, it needs a basin, and it needs looking after. Treat it as a system, not a one-time install.
Dry wells are the popular recommendation and the one to question here. They hold water underground and rely on the soil around them taking it in. Clay takes water slowly, so during heavy rain a dry well can fill and stay full.
Wherever the water ends up, keep the discharge well clear of your foundation, and check what rules apply to where you send it. Pushing your runoff onto a neighbor's property is its own kind of problem.
There is already a pipe leaving your property. It carries water away and it is right there. Tying a yard drain into it looks like the obvious shortcut.
Do not connect yard or roof drainage into your sanitary sewer line.
That line exists to carry wastewater from inside your house. It is sized for sinks, showers, toilets, and a washing machine. A heavy rain across your lot puts more water into it in ten minutes than your household produces in a week.
The system downstream was never built for that volume either. When stormwater gets into sanitary lines across a neighborhood, the whole system backs up. The sewage that comes up as a result does not necessarily come up at the house that caused it. It comes up wherever the system gives first, which might be your neighbor's tub.
It is also not allowed. Stormwater and sanitary sewage are kept in separate systems on purpose, and connecting them is a violation you can be held responsible for. If a previous owner or a past contractor made that connection on your property, it becomes your problem when it is found.
Before you spend anything on drainage, rule this out. Some wet yards are not being fed by the sky.
A leaking sewer line puts water into the ground continuously. That produces a patch that behaves differently from a drainage problem, and the difference is worth knowing before you dig a trench for the wrong reason.

Any of those and the problem is a pipe, not a puddle. A drainage system installed over a leaking line just moves rainwater around while the leak carries on.
A sewer camera inspection settles it. Looking inside the pipe is a far smaller undertaking than installing a drainage system you may not need.
A yard that holds water is not just an inconvenience. It is slowly working on the pipe underneath it.
Clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks back when it dries. That is a lot of movement, and it happens every wet season and every dry one. Everything buried in that soil moves with it, including your sewer line.
Pipe does not settle evenly. One stretch drops further than the next, and you end up with a low spot that holds water inside the line. That is a sag, and it is one of the main reasons drains here keep backing up after they have been cleared. The same movement pulls pipe joints apart, and separated joints are where roots find their way in.
A section of yard that stays saturated goes through that swell-and-shrink cycle harder than the rest. So the wettest part of your lot is also where the ground is working hardest on whatever is buried there.
