Someone has offered to rebuild your sewer line from the inside instead of digging up your yard. It sounds like the obvious choice, and you are wondering what the catch is.
There is a catch, or rather several. We should also say plainly that we do this work, so you have fair reason to weigh our answer accordingly. What follows is what we would want to know if someone were quoting it to us.
Lining is genuinely the right answer for a lot of pipes in Sugar Land. It is also the wrong answer for some, and a few of the reasons are things a homeowner would never think to ask about. One of them, the most important one, is that a liner takes the shape of the pipe it goes into.
Below, we cover where lining cannot be used at all, what it does not fix even when it works, what you give up in exchange, and when digging is the better call.
Lining has real limits, and most of them come down to the pipe you already have.
None of that makes lining a bad choice. It makes it a specific one. The question is whether your pipe is a candidate.
Lining rebuilds a pipe from the inside. That means there has to be a pipe left to build inside. Some lines rule themselves out before anything else gets considered.
The section has collapsed. A liner needs something to press against and cure into. Where the pipe has caved in, there is nothing holding the shape.
Joints have shifted badly out of line. When one length of pipe has moved off the next by more than a little, a liner cannot bridge that step cleanly. That kind of offset comes from clay soil moving over years, not from a single event.
The run has tight or awkward geometry. Multiple sharp bends, or fittings sitting close together, are hard to line well.
The pipe wall is too far gone. A liner works with the host pipe, not entirely in place of it. Past a certain amount of deterioration, replacement is the honest answer.
The geometry point deserves a note, because it is the one people find surprising. Liners do not turn corners neatly. Around a tight bend the material tends to wrinkle and pull out of round, and a wrinkle inside a finished pipe becomes a place debris catches. A straight run is a good candidate. A run with several sharp turns is a conversation.

This is the one to understand before you agree to anything.
A liner takes the shape of the pipe it goes into. It follows every curve, every dip, and every rise of the host line. What comes out is a smooth, sealed, structurally sound pipe in exactly the same shape as the old one.
So if your line has a sag in it, lining does not remove the sag. It gives you a well-sealed pipe that still holds water in the same low spot. Waste still drops out there. Debris still collects. The backups you were having may keep happening, in a pipe that now looks perfect on camera.

That matters more here than in most places. Our clay soil swells and shrinks with the seasons, and that movement is what settles buried pipe unevenly in the first place. Slope problems need the pipe re-supported or replaced. There is no lining solution to a low spot, because the defect is the shape of the line and the liner copies the shape.
Ask directly whether there is a sag anywhere on the run being quoted. If the answer is vague, that is worth pressing on before you spend anything.
Here is the pattern most lines follow.
Day one. The line is clear and water moves normally. The root mass is gone. The opening those roots came through is exactly as it was.
The first months. Fine roots find their way back toward the opening. Moisture is leaking out of it, and that is what they follow. Nothing shows up inside your house yet.
Somewhere in the first year or two. Growth reaches the point where it catches paper and grease. A drain starts running slow. This is usually the first sign you notice.
After that. Without a repair, the cycle repeats. Each round of clearing tends to hold for less time, because the opening keeps widening as roots thicken inside it.
That last part is the one to watch. Track the dates.
If your first clearing held two years and the next held one, that trend is telling you something. Shortening intervals mean the pipe is getting worse, not that your plumber is doing worse work.
Keep the service dates somewhere you can find them. That history is the clearest evidence you have about what is happening underground.
Assume your pipe is a good candidate and the job goes well. You are still accepting a few things.
You lose some diameter. The liner has thickness, and it sits inside your existing pipe. Smoother walls move water better than rough old pipe does, which offsets part of that, but not all of it. The tradeoff matters more on a smaller line than a larger one.
You cannot cable the line afterward. This is the one people are least often told. A lined pipe generally should not be cleared with a snake, because a cable can catch and damage the liner. Future cleaning gets done with water instead.
Branch connections have to be reopened. The liner covers the openings where other lines join in. Those get cut back open afterward. Done poorly, a reinstatement leaves a rough edge that catches debris or a gap where roots find their way in.
Future work on that section is harder. Repairs, taps, and alterations all become more complicated once a run is lined.
The cabling point is worth sitting with. It changes how your line gets maintained for as long as you own the house. If you are used to having a drain cleared with a snake, that option goes away on the lined section, and anyone working on it later needs to know it was lined.
Most lining problems are not really about lining. They come from preparation and workmanship.
The host pipe has to be properly cleaned first. A liner installed over scale, grease, or root debris does not bond the way it should. The cleaning is not a preliminary step you can rush.
Wrinkles and folds become permanent. Material that bunches during installation cures that way. Every wrinkle inside a finished pipe is a spot where debris catches.
Curing has to be complete. A liner that has not fully cured is not doing the job it was installed to do, and the shortfall is not visible from the fixture.
There is no fixing a bad liner in place. This is the part that raises the stakes. A defective liner generally cannot be corrected from inside. Putting it right usually means excavating the section, which is the outcome lining was chosen to avoid.
One practical note about the work itself. Resins give off fumes as they cure. Good ventilation matters during installation, and so does making sure the traps in your house have water in them, since dry traps let air move between the line and your rooms. Ask how ventilation will be handled and whether you should be out of the house while the work is done.
None of this argues against lining. It argues for caring who does it.
Lining is not automatically the less disruptive option. Sometimes the trench is the right answer.

That last row is the one that tips the balance in our area. Most homes here sit on a concrete slab with the drain line running underneath it. Reaching that pipe means tunneling in from outside the foundation or breaking through the floor of a room.
So lining wins here more often than it would in a place with basements and crawlspaces. Not because the method is universally better, but because the alternative is so much more disruptive under a slab.
A short run through an open side yard is a different situation entirely. There, digging can be quicker, simpler, and more permanent, and anyone who will not consider it is not weighing your situation properly.
