The Five-Minute Test: How to Identify Your Pipe Material

Start by finding pipe you can actually see and touch. Good spots include under the kitchen or bathroom sink, near the water heater, at the main shutoff, and in the garage or attic.

Then run these three checks:

  • Magnet test. Hold a magnet against the pipe. It sticks to galvanized steel. It will not stick to copper or PEX.
  • Scratch test. Scratch the surface lightly with a coin or screwdriver. Dull silver-gray means galvanized. A penny color means copper. White or colored plastic means CPVC or PEX.
  • Look at it. Galvanized is dull gray and turns rough and uneven as it ages. Threaded joints where sections screw together are a common sign.

Three minutes of this tells you more than an hour of searching online.

The test has limits worth knowing. It only tells you about the pipe in front of you. Runs often change material partway, especially in homes with past repairs. What sits inside your walls can be different from what shows under the sink.

What Failing Galvanized Pipe Looks Like

Galvanized fails from the inside, where you cannot see it. The zinc coating wears away over time. Rust then builds along the pipe wall and slowly narrows the opening water flows through.

Watch for these signs:

  • Water pressure that dropped gradually over years, not overnight
  • Rust-tinted or brown water, often worst on the first draw in the morning
  • Pinhole leaks, or water spots showing up on walls and ceilings
  • One bathroom running weak while the rest of the house is fine

That last one surprises people. Galvanized rarely fails everywhere at once. One branch of the system corrodes faster than another, so the trouble shows up in one room first.

Galvanized Pipe and Lead: What Sugar Land's Water Records Show

The lead question comes up because of how older systems were built. A galvanized line that sat downstream of a lead service line could absorb lead over the years. The EPA created a category for exactly that situation, called Galvanized Requiring Replacement.

Sugar Land completed its Lead Service Line Inventory under that federal rule. The city found no lead service lines anywhere in its water system, on either the city side or the customer side.
