A plumber or foundation company told you that you have a post-tension slab. You nodded. Then you looked it up, because nobody explained what it meant for your house or the repair you are facing.
So what is a post-tension slab, and why does it change the repair? It is a concrete foundation built with steel cables running through it. Those cables were pulled tight after the concrete cured, and they are still pulling today. That single fact changes how any pipe underneath your floor gets reached.
Below, you will see what those cables do and why builders here use them. You will get a short checklist for telling whether your own home has one. Then we walk through the repair paths that work on this kind of slab, and the one that does not.
A post-tension slab is a concrete foundation reinforced with steel cables instead of ordinary rebar. The cables are pulled tight after the concrete cures, which holds the whole slab in compression. That compression is what lets it sit on shifting clay soil without cracking apart.
It changes the repair because those cables are still under tension today. Cutting one releases that force. So the usual fix for a pipe under a slab, sawing an opening in the floor and working through it, is off the table until the cables are located.
Repairs move to one of three paths instead:
Most concrete slabs use rebar. Steel bars sit inside the concrete and hold it together as it takes on weight. The bars do their job by just being there.
A post-tension slab works differently. Steel cables run through plastic sleeves cast into the concrete. After the concrete cures, hydraulic jacks pull each cable tight and lock it in place.
That squeezes the whole slab. And it stays squeezed, year after year. The concrete is held under pressure instead of simply sitting there.
Think about lifting a row of books off a shelf. Nothing holds them together. You press hard from both ends, and the row lifts as one piece. Let go and it falls apart.
Your foundation works the same way. The pressure is what keeps it acting like one solid piece as the ground below moves.
Here is the part that matters for any work on your home. Those cables are not finished doing their job. They were tightened the year your house was built, and they are still pulling right now.

On an ordinary slab, reaching a broken pipe is direct work. A plumber saws an opening in the floor, digs down, fixes the pipe, and patches the concrete. It is disruptive, but the method is simple.
That method does not carry over to a post-tension slab. The opening a plumber would cut might land right on top of a cable. From above, there is no way to see where the cables run.
Those cables are still loaded. Cutting one lets go of force that has been held in place since the slab was poured. The damage does not stay at the cut, either. Each cable runs a long way through the slab, so losing one affects far more than the spot you opened.
At that point you no longer have a plumbing problem. You have a foundation problem, and a much harder one than the leak you started with.
So the job changes shape before it begins. The question stops being where is the leak. It becomes how do we get to the leak without touching the slab.
You have options. Three of them, and all three leave the cables alone.
Tunneling. A crew hand-digs from outside your foundation, then works under the slab to reach the pipe. Your floors are never opened. The slab stays in one piece, exactly as it was built.
Rerouting. New pipe runs through walls or the attic and bypasses the section under the slab. Nothing under the foundation gets touched at all.
A scanned opening. Sometimes going through the floor is still the right answer. It happens only after the cables are located and the opening is placed clear of them.

Check your garage floor for a stamped warning against cutting or drilling the slab. Your closing documents and construction plans usually name the foundation type. You can also look for small round patches spaced along the slab edge. If none of that settles it, treat the slab as post-tension.
