Houston Has A New Outdoor Attraction

Houston and the Houston area is expansive. There are always new areas to explore. New business to visit. New urban wildernesses to discover. And, Houston is about to get another new outdoor attraction. The Houston Chronicle has published the announcement that over 600 acres will be conserved by The Houston Audubon Society for us to explore soon.

This Houston group will turn BP’s land into a nature trail

More than 600 acres of untouched land on the Gulf of Mexico was saved for conservation.

The Houston Audubon Society bought 603 acres of land in High Island near the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. The organization purchased the land from BP America after an intense seven years of negotiations, according to the organization.

Another 40 acres of land was donated on North Deer Island north of Galveston.

“Placing these acres under Houston Audubon’s management and protection is a win-win for the surrounding community, the thousands who visit our region to discover and explore the diverse wilderness of the Upper Texas Coast, and future generations who will appreciate the importance of our coastal heritage,” Executive Director Helen Drummond said.

The group plans on building the Gulf Habitats Nature Trail with the newly purchased land, which would connect the Boy Scout Woods Bird Sanctuary in High Island to the nearby beach.

Walkers will also be able to explore several different types of Gulf Coast environments, including forests, marshes, prairies and the beach.

The latest purchase and donation are among the society’s 17 nature sanctuaries in the area.
