It might seem like adding half a ton to the size of your unit, for example, is simply adding some redundancy and “can’t hurt.” However, experts say that properly determining the size of the system based on a number of factors is the only way to ensure peak efficiency of the unit. Make sure you hire an experienced HVAC contractor so that you get a system sized perfectly for your home.
No assumptions. If you are replacing an existing system, don’t allow your contractor to look at the size of your current system and order the replacement in the same size. Even if your system was remarkably efficient for 10 to 15 years until you decided to upgrade, experts say all HVAC systems lose efficiency over time. There are simple formulas that some contractors use, such as 600 square feet per ton, but there is no way to know for sure if the size truly fits your home and climate without performing a load calculation for the home.
Systems too small. The obvious problem with a system that is too small to properly heat or cool your home is that you and your family will be uncomfortable during the hottest and coldest days of the year. But the problem with systems that are too small goes beyond that, according to experts. The system will be operating continuously and that will lead to increased repairs and will also significantly reduce the lifespan of the unit.
