Not a fan of the long lines and the expense of going to a haunted house for Halloween? Need something different, fun and kid friendly? No problem. There are lots of kid friendly, entertaining things to do for halloween that won’t break the bank. Houston On the Cheap has compiled a list of fun things for you and your family.
Houston has plenty to offer for Halloween-themed family fun in October — and a couple geared more to adults. Check out this round-up of events this weekend and beyond — some of which are free!
** Halloween Monster Mayhem: The Children’s Museum of Houston will turn into a Halloween mecca October 11 – 31 with Halloween Monster Mayhem. Kids can wear their costume and explore the mansion, complete spooky science experiments, and more.Free trick-or-treating is available weekdays Tuesday – Friday 4 pm – 6 pm, 4 pm – 8 pm Thursdays, and all day weekends through Halloween night. Don’t miss Moe’s Monster Mash Bash October 31! Free family admission on Thursdays, October 13, October 20 and October 27, from 5 pm – 8 pm, for Free Family Night. ** Boo on the Boardwalk: Kids can enjoy free Trick-or-Treating at the Kemah Boardwalk for Halloween-themed fun through October 31. Enjoy trick or treating at retail stores 4 pm – 8 pm Fridays – Sundays, outdoor movie each Friday night, kids’ activities and more. Lots of free fun but haunted houses have a fee. Located in Kemah
** Zoo Boo at Houston Zoo: It’s a Halloween party that takes over the Houston Zoo October 14-October 31!The annual Zoo Boo at Houston Zoo features lots of kid-friendly fun including trick-or-treating, costume parade, Living Pumpkin Patch, Monster Mural, Monster Mashquerade, and Candy Corners. Enjoy lighter crowds on Fridays from 9 am – 1 pm. Weekend hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am – 4 pm. Open October 31 9 am – 1 pm. Zoo Boo is included with Zoo admission: $13 for kids age 2-11 and $17 for adults. Houston Zoo is located in Hermann Park.
** Bass Pro Shops Halloween: Bass Pro Shops proudly sponsors its free Halloween activities, “It’s a Great Pumpkin” October 24-31. Families can enjoy free crafts, free 4×6 photo, Halloween Scavenger Hunt and more. Halloween night includes trick-or-treating, costume parade, and mini pumpkin decorating. Bass Pro Shops has two Houston area locations: Katy and Pearland.
** Hocus Pocus Outdoor Movie: Get in the spirit of Halloween with a free outdoor screening of Hocus Pocus October 21, 8 pm, at GreenStreet downtown for Friday Flicks on The Lawn. GreenStreet is located at 1201 Fannin.
** Hotel Transylvania 2 Outdoor Movie: Enjoy Hotel Transylvania 2 at Sugar Land Town Square’s free outdoor screening. The movie is October 22, 7:15 pm.
** ArBOOretum: It’s a family fun day at Houston Arboretum and Nature Center’sArBOOretum October 22 with public admission noon – 4 pm. Members-only can attend 10 am – noon. The day features trick-or-treating, hayrides, pumpkin decorating, live owls, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and more. Don’t miss the Trick-or-Treat Trail where kids can learn about different creatures out on a nature trail. Admission is $15 for ages 3 and up, with a $2 discount on advance tickets. Members are free. Free offsite parking with shuttle buses running from 4801 Woodway garage. The HANC parking lot will be closed with no drop off or pick up at the Arboretum entrance.
** Tricks & Treats Among the Trees: This free event out in nature, Tricks & Treats Among the Trees, is held Saturday, October 22, 3:30 pm – 7 pm at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center. The afternoon also features Halloween fun with crafts, live creepy critters, games, hayrides, a critter storybook trail, and more. Costumed trick-or-treaters are encouraged! Proceeds from carnival-inspired games benefit Jones Park. Located at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center, 20634 Kenswick Dr. in Humble.
** Trick or Treat Trail: An annual favorite in The Woodlands, kids can travel Trick or Treat Trail Sunday, October 23, 3 pm – 6 pm, at Town Green Park along The Woodlands Waterway. Kids will love trick-or-treating, costume contests, children’s activities, games, vendor booths and more. Located at 2099 Lake Robbins Drive.
** Hauntcert — Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra presents a Halloween-themed concert outdoors, Hauntcert, October 29 at Sugar Land Town Square. Kids will enjoy the Trunk or Treat beginning at 1:15 pm. The concert begins at 2 pm. Participate in the costume parade during intermission!
** Treat Street Fest : Cinco Ranch Church of Christ is hosting Treat Street Fest October 28 . This is a safe, family-friendly event for children 2 years – 5th grade and their families. Gates open at 6 pm. Activities include carnival games, bounce houses, pictures with the Big Pumpkin, face painting, food trucks and more! Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, 6655 South Mason Rd (Intersection of 1093 and South Mason Road). Tickets are $2 per person in advance or $4 at the event entrance on the day of the event. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.crcoc.org/treatstreet. Children 2 and under are free, so go to the ticket site and request a free ticket. You can also buy a Family ticket online for families of 4 or more for only $10.
** Scream on the Green : This citywide Halloween party, Scream on the Green , is a free event for the whole family October 28 , 6 pm – 10 pm. Dress up the whole family for the costume contest with prizes. Categories range from infants to adults and dogs! Catch the free outdoor movie, Little Shop of Horrors , beginning at 7:30 pm. Discovery Green is located downtown at 1500 McKinney.
** Howl-O-Ween Fest — Cypress’ Bridgeland sponsors the annual favorite Howl-O-Ween Fest October 29 , 10 am – 4 pm. Enjoy stage performances, pumpkin decorating, pooch fashion show and costume contest, child and pet trick or treating, dog rescue groups, fall craft making, pumpkin patch, food trucks, face painting, and more. Don’t miss performances from Christian Stoinev and his dog, Scooby ( America’s Got Talent finalists), Panfilov’s Performing Pets featuring canine and feline acts.
** Market Square Park Halloween Bash — Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow and TUTS present a free outdoor screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show at Market Square Park Halloween Bash . This is October 29, 6:30 pm. Don’t miss the costume contest and prizes plus a chance to learn the Time Warp. Located at 301 Milam. {This is probably geared more to teens and adults!}
** Ghostly Gardens at Moody Gardens : Head to Galveston for this free Halloween-related family event. Ghostly Gardens at Moody Gardens offers a number of special treats for kids Sunday, October 30, including free trick-or-treating, face painting, crafts and a costume contest with prizes. The event is 2 pm – 4 pm, with the costume contest at 3 pm. Dress at least one family member in costume and pay only $5 admission, per person, to the various attractions at Moody Gardens.
** Halloween Town — Sugar Land Town Square brings back its favorite Halloween Town Sunday, October 30 , 4 pm – 8 pm. Kids in costume will love jack-o-lanterns, candy stations, and Halloween characters roaming through the area. A free shuttle service will run from Mercer Stadium at 16403 Lexington Blvd.
** Deer Park’s Halloween Carnival : It’s the Deer Park annual Halloween Carnival , October 31 , 6 pm – 9 pm. It features pumpkin carving contest, carnival rides, costume contests, and more. Located at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center, 500 W. 13th Street in Deer Park.
** Moe’s Monster Mash Bash : The Children’s Museum of Houston is hosting a kid-friendly Halloween party October 31 , 3 pm – 8 pm — Moe’s Monster Mash Bash . Families can enjoy trick-or-treating, Thriller Dance Party, Monster Mashup, DJ and more. The event is free with museum admission: $12 for kids and adults. Located at 1500 Binz.
** Movies at Miller: Night of the Living Dead — Sit outdoors and watch a scary movie, Night of the Living Dead , at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Halloween night, 7:30 pm. This movie is unrated, and Miller Outdoor Theatre suggests it’s not recommended for children under age 13.
